Anybody know of anywhere in Welly that might give us some 'leads' (pardon the pun) for this type of accom ?
I am thinking we'll rent for about 3 months while we find our feet and than buy.
I've heard that many dogs in NZ live 'outside' is that normal ?
Although I'd be quite happy to buy and erect a temporary pen for my 2 until we get our own place.
Thanks

We had this problem last year along with 3 kids as well.
In the end we left our dog in the UK with my parents in law and rented without the dog. We found a lot of places in the city wouldn't allow dogs. Most landlords were okay with cats but not dogs :( The further you come out of Wellington the more they seem accepting but it is really hard to find somewhere.
If you can delay the dog coming out and get yourselves settled it's worth doing. We waited 3/4 months and got our own house before deciding to ship the dog over. It was also a safety net in case we really wanted to go back to the UK we wouldn't have to worry about a huge expense shipping the dog back as well as us.
You'll also have to get a dog licence usually from the council and you renew it once a year. Not sure how much it is in Wellington but out here in the Wairarapa it's around $40 mark.

I don't know any agencies that cater specifically for rentals with pets. It depends on the owner of the particular house the agency has on its books, or the private landlord.
You may stand a better chance with a private landlord, have you looked on TM?
This is a thread with loads of agencies listed on one post. http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=5076&highlight=welly+rentals
If you find a place you can always offer to have the carpets professionally cleaned etc before you leave.
Sizzling's idea is a good one too. It means that you won't snatch at the 1st rental just because they'll take Fido.

We have no one to leave the dogs with in the UK.
What we are considering is taking the dogs with us but kennelling (sp) them at the other end for a few weeks while we look around for a rental. But visiting them every day - or even taking them out during the day - just dropping them off overnight each time.
But a rental that takes pets would be OK. Mine sleep in the garage so they don't even have to go inside the house as such.

This is a difficult one. When we came over last year we found a rental thet would take us, the kids and the dog no problem - then 9 months later when the landlord sold and we had to find somewhere else we struggled - especially as we had acquired a puppy in the meantime. There has been some bad dog stories recently and this seems to have put a lot of people off. Having said that the rental market seems to have slowed - some places now have signs outside that say to rent and they don't seem to be shifting - so maybe it's down to the time of year. If a rental has been empty for a while people are more willing to accept dogs!
Most rental agencies require that you do have carpets professionally cleaned when you leave - the last agency insisted on it and the carpet cleaner couldn't understnad why!
We're now renting privately and the place is pretty grotty (the original 1950's kitchen!) but the dogs were not a problem. We thought we'd be in our own place long ago - but things seem to take forever in NZ
Suggest you contact a number of agencies and see what they can offer.
