:o Can anybody give me some advise on just getting up and going, that is of course getting a W.P for NZ House in London and just getting on a plane, sending the dog over and shipping our goods.
We have been umming and aring for ages and I just want to go. We have looked into all the different alternatives, but nothing seems to suit us. At first we though Skilled Migrent, but the more I have looked into it, it does not seem right for us although O.H is a fully skilled welder, he is fully time served but earned most of his experiance in house rather than in collouge. So previously the more I have looked into things the more complicated & impossible it seems.
So I want to just get a W.P go over their, stay is a motel until we find accommodation that will house a dog and get jobs.
Has anybody done it this way, what are the complications? How quick were you sorted? was it easy to find a job and house to rent? etc etc etc, as mush information regarding this prosess will be of help.
Also if we did do it the cheats way what complications would there be when applying for P.R, and under what circumstanses can you apply for P.R. I seem to think that it is after 2 years and that you have got to have stayed out of trouble and in continous employment throughout the 2 year duration, are there any other requirements ie minimum income etc.
As much advise as possible would be fantastic (even on issues not raised).
Thanks and keep up the good work.

The first things that comes to mind is that one way or another - you are likely to haev to apply through the Skilled Migrants Categaory sooner or later anyway. That is if you want to have the right to stay permanantly. If you get a work permit - it is only temporary (upto 2 years I think). Some people have to do that - because they dont have the skills or education to get enough points to go through the skilled migrants. If you do - then it may be as well to kick start that now. Your first step would be to use the online points calculatir on the NZIS website.
So, you also need to think about whether you want to settle in NZ permanantly, or whether you just want to take a few years over here, maybe even take a few years an a Work Permit and then think about your options later.
All in all - for my money - if you get PR under the SMC - then do it. It gives you many more options when you get here - for example - on a work permit you have less flexibility in changing jobs than if you have PR via the SMC.
Does that help at all?

thanks for your quick reply - yes it does help, only we have looked and looked into the SMC I have spent hours on the Newzeland Immigration website - been on the calc 101 times etc. It just seems as though he is not going to get enough points becase all his years and skills are mostly through work experiance. He has NVQ Level 1 & 2 but these are not recognised in NZ so it seems as though it is going to be quite tough.
Also I thought that if we got a W.P then we could go over their on a work to residence basis, am I wrong?
Thanks

I don't know an awful lot about work permits, but I know that someone will correct me if I am wrong.
I believe that to be issued a work permit whilst in the UK, you have to have a NZ job offer in place.
However, once you get to NZ (on 'holiday') and then secure a job, you can then get a work permit.
Don't forget, that once you are working in NZ, that all your NZ work experience AND the fact that you already have a job, count towards the points for your EOI, so consequently, you may have enough points without having to go through the Skilled Migrant Category.......is this making sense?? So therefor, at some point (don't know how long) you will be able to apply for P.Residency from within NZ.
Cant comment on the 'whys and wherefores' of the implications relating to the shipping your goods etc, but someone will.
Hope this helps,
Julie

Oh and by the way....there are 2 types of Work to Residency Visas. One is attached to the S.M.Category and the other is probably the one you are thinking of where you have to earn a minimum of (I think) $45,000 per annum over a 2 year period. Don't worry, you won't need that one.
Don't get this confused with an ordinary work visa though.
Complicated isn't it, but you'll get there in the end.
Good luck.

Hi Allsop89,
This is what we are doing in August - but Zardell is right you DO need a job offer in place OR go as tourists and look for a job when there and then get a permit - that is our chosen route. No WP issued in eithr UK or NZ without employment
Feel free to PM me with any other questions.

Thats a really good point that Julie is making Allsopp. I have a firend in this situation - but whose job is not on the skills shortage list - so as far as we are aware - cannot apply for skilled migrant PR in any case.We are off to Immigration in the next few weeks to discuss options. But if your OH's welding is on the list - then you can add in points for NZ work experiece.
So - best thing to do first is use the points calculator again, and say that you have 1 or 2 years New Zealand Work experience. How many points does that get you? Is it enough? That will tell you if this is a road worth going down.
BTW - how many points DO you have? I ask because although you need at least 115 points now - it hasnt always been that - and it may drop again in the future. Can you get to 100 points now - or does that need NZ experience?
