Hi everyone,

we arrive in Auckland on 2nd November and intend to go travelling for at least a month. We thought it may be a good idea to buy a vehicle rather than waste money on hiring one at first. Can anyone recommend any good dealers in Auckland? Is it best to go directly to a dealer or go through autotrader? How long does it take generally to purchase a car?

Any experiences? advice?

Thank you

I dunno any good dealers, but I always check at www.autotrader.co.nz, plenty of cars to choose and the dealers also. But again, I dunno which specific dealer is good...sorry

You could also quickly check out http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-me-motors/index.htm for private used car sales.

You should also try the car market out at Ellerslie http://www.carfair.co.nz/buyers.phtml or go to one of the turners car auctions: www.turners.co.nz

Car Dealers in NZ have the most atrocious margins possible. They will not buy the car back from you - and you will likely loose 25% of the value, if you sell back at auction. Pop into Turners on their Budget (under 5K) day and pick a popular model ie Toyota or Nissan. You can sell it back at Turners when you leave. You may even make a profit, if you are lucky.

It is a bit riskier with more expensive cars and you are dependent on pricing it exactly right.
