Think this is my 2nd question recently so only about 998 to go!!
Have just printed off the IRD application form (IR595) and bare in mind we are still in the UK,is there anywhere over here I can send it to rather than offices in NZ?
Also do we need them for our girls? (8yrs and 10yrs),not on benefits over here.
Many thanks once again.

Hi,

We applied for our IRD numbers from the UK and put our UK home address on the forms. They were very efficient and we received them in about seven days after applying. :nice1

Hope that helps?
Jo

Hi Jo thanks for that.
Where did u send your form though? was it somewhere in the UK or did u have to send it to NZ?

You have to send them to IRD in NZ.

I believe the only reason the kids need IRD numbers is if you want to open a savings account for them. Otherwise, they get them at 16, a bit like our National Insurance numbers.

I've heard that having the IRD number means that when our money gets converted into NZD we pay a lower rate of interest on our savings?

Anyone know?

You pay a lower rate when you are resident in the country.

If you lived in NZ and didn't have an IRD number, you would pay a higher rate than if you lived in NZ and did have a number.

If you live in the UK and have an IRD number, you still get charged at the non-residents rate.

We had to send to NZ but it only took about 2 weeks . dont forget to apply for the kids as well you will need them if you apply for family assistance!!

So do u get family allowance like we do over here each month?
Do u have to be on a mega low wage for family assistance? as don't think we'd get that.

Jameelka,
They don't have family allowance like the uk, the nz equivalent is family assistance.
You don't have to be on a low income to get family assistance have a look at this link http://www.ird.govt.nz/familyassistance/ there is a calculator that works it out for you.
I think you need PR to claim it.

Thanks Julie.
It's things like this if you did n't ask or if it was n't brought up on the forum you'd have no idea about.

Tax Rates:

If you are a Non Resident - you get charged 10% tax - which is the Non Resident Witholding Tax.

Some financial institutions can apply to not charge the tax to non residents. In which case you have to pay a 2% levy, so your bill is reduced. This entirely depends on who you save moeny with though. You cannot apply for it as an individual through the IRD.

If you are a resident, you pay tax at the same rates at everyone else: 19.5% etc depending on income. Applys to kids as well

If you intend to stay and BECOME a resident: It pays to get an IR number asap. If you do not claim to be a "non resident" and you dont have an IRD mumber - then you are charged tax at 45% :wah .

The worst bit: say you claim to be non resident: you get charged tax at 10%. Then later in the tax year you get residency and dont have an iRD no. You get whacked with 45% - AND THEY BACKDATE IT TO THE DAY YOU ARRIVED.

So if you are intending to be a TAX RESIDENT in NZ (which is actulaly different from getting PR) then get an IR number asap.
