OK, just about to submit my EOI at last. I was wondering about the amount of checking up & verifying of points claimed ( for work experience, etc.) that goes on if you are selected from the pool?
For eg, one job I have included as relevant was in a studio where I worked in the UK part-time for about a year in '99/'00. I'm not even 100% sure it still exists tbh, but it was a very valuable experience for me & totally relevant to my current work.
Obviously, things like certificates are easy to obtain to provide supporting evidence...but what about less "tangible" things like this experience?
Anyone have any stories about this sort of thing? Ta.

Dave - we knew of two of Woz's past employers who were no more back from the early 90's and that worried us, but no questions were asked - they must surely appreciate that company's go out of business/move etc. We are friends with many of those running the co's that NZIS would have contacted and none that we know of were approached. The only reference we've had that was actually followed through was by the library when I got the job offer.... they emailed.. and that was nothing to do with visas/PR etc.
I can only think that if there was something that sounded an alarm for them, then they might dig further? i.e. if all your previous employers were no longer in existence!!

My impression from the ITA was that the responsibility is on you to prove, in writing, your experiences. They ask for various forms of proof- letters of employment, pay slips, tax records- anything to prove what you say. We also had an employer go out of business, and only the most minor kind of tax evidence to support our claim, but we'll see how that goes when a real person finally looks at our ITA. I don't think they are going to spend time trying to find out about the company- they might say we don't have enough evidence and therefore not take us as having as much experience as we claimed- and lower our points because of it. I think if you are truthful in your application all will work out just fine in the end.

I think that pretty much sums it up...

Thanks. Yeah, it's all true & above board what I've included. Just hard to prove. And any relevant paperwork got lost years ago. I guess I could look up previous employers & get em to write a letter or something.
The kind of work I do ( audio-post prod) has never been very big on formal contracts... even now in NZ. I guess I'll just have to be prepared.
As it stands I have 180 points anyway...so if they knock a few off because of lack of proof I think I'll still be ok.

Sounds like you should be OK anyway Dave! I was going to suggest the "looking people up" bit, making sure you provide them with a letter to sign, rather than asking them to write one, just to be sure it includes everything you need it to.
Good luck,

Hi All,
Don't mean to hijack this thread but it is sort of relevant to my question. As you know we are going over in August on Vis Visa only then to look for work. Obviously we don't want to arouse suspicions at the airport by travelling with all our birth certs, reference letters etc. It is my intention to copy all these docs and send the originals over to my Sis in NZ - and to do this soon so that we have time to replace them if they go missing.
My question is this, being as we are hoping to apply for PR from NZ and that given all our original docs will be in NZ when we do, what, if any docs shoud I get specifically certified before I send the originals?
Thanks

Nanny, I'm pleased you've asked this question.....We were wondering the same thing, so many things to think about and plan!

Dave.
You will be asked to provide proof of any claim made in your EOI and they will want proof of this job if you include it.
We were in a similar position - one of my OH past employers was no longer in business, so this is what we did........
We did not need those years of employment to be counted in order for us to have sufficient points, but like you, we thought it was valuable experience and needed to be mentioned.
So, we didn't include it on our EOI, but we did mention it in the covering letter that accompanied our ITA.
Subsequently, it was mentioned when OH had his interview with NZIS and all was OK 'cos we now have our PR.
Basically, all I would say to you is don't tell them anything they don't need to know, because it only creates hassle on both your side and theirs....not worth it in my opinion.
Hope this has helped,
God luck,
Julie

Hi All,

Sorry, not actually answering your question, but I don't think you need to worry about arousing suspicion. No one is going to be looking in your luggage to see if you're carrying your birth certificates. It's very unlikely that your luggage would be searched for any reason. And if you did get searched, it would be because they suspect you of smuggling drugs or bananas etc., and a few personal documents are not going to be of much interest.

Definately do Birth certificates, passports (only need the photo page NOT the whole passport) marriage certificate, P60's to prove work experience, could do bank statements & council tax bills as proof of living together for 12 months - (unless you would be happy to send originals with a photocopy for them to keep)
If you get references from employers ask for a few originals on headed paper.

Do we still need to prove 12 months of being together if we have been married for 12 years and have a marriage certificate?
Thanks

Yep we have been married 15 (at the end of this month, bet he forgets!!) we have three kids together and still have to prove we have been living together for the last 12 months.
I am sending two joint bank account statements one from last year and the most recent one, and our council tax bills for last year and this, and our marriage certificate.
