A friend of mine is travelling round the North Island in July and hopes to ski. Does anyone have first hand experience of the North Island resorts and where the best places to go are? Are they open yet? What is access like etc.

Whakapapa opened on Friday I think (Mr Ruapehu), we went up there last year, we aren't skiers but we are hoping to learn soon :nice1

Yeah, it opens on Friday.

Haven't actually done any skiing up there yet but did go up last winter for a recce.

Not sure about the slopes but the accommodation is top notch. There's the Chateau at Whakapapa (expensive but very nice). They have chalets and motel units up there too. Another (cheaper) option is staying at one of the many B&B's. motels, lodges & hotels in Ohakune. It's a cracker of a ski village - all log cabins and ski shops. Most places that offer accommodation will also run a curtesy bus back and forth from the slopes.
