Hello everybody

I have heard that electrical devices are so expensive in NZ in comparison to EU. Is that true? and if yes, what kind of devices are so expensive?

What should one bring with when moving to NZ ? (regarding electrical devices)

I had heard the same so I went on the below site to compare prices. It didn't seem too bad although if you've got stuff already then you might as well try to bring it. Washing machines seem to be more expensive so if you've got a good one then it might be worth bringing.

Look at the below site to see what the cost would be of stuff in NZ and then find out how much it costs to ship your stuff there.

Hope it helps.

We find that in the main prices here are comparable with the UK and in some cases cheaper. We brought our Fridge and our Freezer over from the UK on the basis that these type of white goods generally run for years with no problems. As for things like washing machines etc the problem is spare parts when things go wrong. Most washing machines here are top loaders, although front loaders are available. The real benefit in NZ is that the electrical firms are always having sales, offering many months with no payments and long interest free periods.

The only real problem we have had is is upright vacuum cleaners. They are rare as hens teeth ( to use an NZ phrase ) unless you want a Dyson. We brought our upright with us and we are having trouble finding replace dust bags.

Some things are cheaper, some more expensive.

If you have stuff already BRING IT ALL!!!! We brought everything we had & it all works fine - no point giving stuff away to have to buy it again when you get out here.

I'd certainly recommend you bring - washing machine (cost us $800 for something that would have cost £200 in UK) & dyson vacuum cleaner (they cost a fortune here! $899 for a cleaner that cost us £160 in the UK!!). Built-in stuff for kitchens is expensive - Ovens, extractors & hobs (decent ones) are also quite expensive, although you're unlikely to bring those with you , just bear it in mind if you have to re-fit a kitchen. However things like TV, DVD, Video, stereos are pretty reasonable & similar price to UK & there are parallel import shops (which are illegal in most other countries) which import stock at discount prices.

Thank you starkhorn for the site. I will look at it.

this is funny (hens teeth :yes )!! So Kiwis seem they do not use Vaccum cleaner!! Acisman, there are VC without a bag. So all you have to do it to empty a container when it is full.

Sarahw, I am not going to bring any stuff like wash machine or fridge with. The cost of transportation is too expensive. So my question is mainly about smaller stuff like Vacum cleaner, Cameras, Camcorder, computer,...etc.

Anyway, thanks all
