Does anyone have any experience of taking a motorhome to NZ? Ours is an older model Hymer (J reg), but in very good condition and a good few years in her yet. We're trying to gauge whether it would be better to sell her in the UK (guide price £16K) and use the money to buy a replacement out there, or whether the shipping costs are warranted. Any ideas of the prices for second-hand motorhomes out there, and/or cost of shipping something as big as a Hymer?

I was looking at the prices of second hand 6 berth camper vans and they were coming in at around $60,000 for a decent one. There is a thread about it on here. I'll see if I can find the link. Depending on the cost of shipping, with the exchange rate being what it is it may not be worth it.

Check out trade me www.trademe.co.nz. Go to the motorhomes section, I think that will give you a fairly good indication.

Also check in copies of 3M (?) magazine - the motohome one in the uK. Mum tells me there are usually stories of peopel who do take the motohome with them. But If I remember rightly its upwards of £10k to do so.
On saying that - if you check out the vans you can buy here - you may find you think its worth the money. As well as Trade me - you should look at Barrons in Taupo - its a Uk company and they sell Euro style vans. NZ Vans are NOT the same spec inside as we are used to - not by a long shot.
Also - you will need to check with LTNZ (Land Transport) as to whether thye would LET you import your motohome. Vehicle import regulations are getting tougher. Apparently its to ensure safety on the road (as teh ad says - Yeah Right!), and nothing at all to do with forcing people to spend yet more money in NZ when they move out here.
