Hi guys

I'm just trying to gather some opinions together.

Me and my OH are coming over next month and moving into our new home. However we don't have any visas yet! We are coming over on Visitors Visa and applying for work once there and then submitting an EOI, we should gather about 140 together if we both get job offers, which we have been told will be fairly easy by our agencies.

Anyway, I'm waffling, basically I just wanted to know if anyone thought it was worth my while getting a Working Holiday Visa, instead of going over on just a visitors visa. I qualify for the visa but my OH doesnt. He is too old! Hehe, well only just! 32, you need to be under 30.

So is there much point one of us going on visitors visa the other on a working holiday visa?

What say ye?!

Can't really give you much info here, but my first thought is this: If you arrive on visitors visas I think you have to have an onward/return ticket. However, if you arrive on a work visa this isn't the case.

Don't take this as the gospel truth, it's just the first thing that sprung to my mind - worth checking out.

Yes I did think this!

Also, I thought if I arrive on a working holiday visa then I can work straight away and then when my other half has a job offer and sends off the EOI as principal applicant I will be tagging on to that anyway! So I can go straight from a working holiday visa to that. Is that right?

One benefit I can think of is that if you have a WHV - wont that mean that you are ready and able to work? Some people can have problems getting job offers if they dont already have a visa entitling them to work - because the companies dont always want the percieved hassle of dealing with immigration.

So the question would then be - if you get a WHV - does that limit the TYPE of work you can do? Or does it mean you can get the job you need to then apply for PR?

Hi Avalon - I don't think it limits the work in my case, you can't work in schools etc but I will be applying for Personal Assistant or Receptionist roles. My OH is the principal applicant on the SMC EOI, i will be classed as the partner who is in current employment in NZ. So it doesn't really matter what work I decide to take on. Does that make sense?!

My understanding (and no doubt someone will correct me!) is that you can't accept or begin a permanent job on a WHV - but there would be nothing to stop a company employing you on a temporary basis until your PR is sorted. And it would mean you could have some money coming in - always good to get used to spending / living on the humble kiwi $ as soon as possible!
