Just wondering what peoples views are on the medicals.
Myself and husband will need to have the medicals done in the next month.
OH is trying hard to loose some more weight and his BMI is around 36/37 at present.
Our dilema is to try and get it down in the next 3 weeks to 35,or have the medical sooner and risk him having further tests.
Does anyone know if u can have the further tests there and then at the medical and at what extra cost? Don't want to have to go back to the same DR 2 weeks later for more tests.
Reason saying all this is if he gives his notice in at work and something appears on the medicals that is a problem and we don't know about then we are a bit stuck!!
The joys and worries of emigrating!!! I'm already having nightmares about it!!
Many thanks once again. :nice1

Not sure what to advise that has to be your decision, But Kev's liver function test has come back 'abnormal'. The doc said it was only slightly odd something to do with the enzyme level which can be affected by a cold coming on????

Anyway we have decided to send it all in and see what happens, Kevs point is that if you are getting a car ready for its MOT, you check all the obvious stuff and put it right and then let the experts tell you what else you need to do!

We could do retests now and wait another 10 days for results, but if we send in the ITA now and the levels are 'abnormal' but acceptable by the NZ medical people we would have wasted 10 days so we are taking the plunge and going for it.

RE your BMI don't they do special 'fasting' tests if your BMI is too high? The docs will work it out there and then and will advise you if more tests are needed on the day. (I beleive!)

Good luck!

It is a great idea to reduce your BMI down to 35, in this case you might avoid extra medical tests. But please consider one fact that BMI itself is not the concern for NZIS, general health status is the one.
My BMI was 35.5 at the time of medical exam, so doctor asked me to do fasting lipid and sugar tests. all OK, except that my liver test showed SGPT higher than normal. NZIS asked me to undergo repeat LFT and hepatit C, plus liver ultra sound scan.

Results suggested that I have mildly fatty liver, but no hepatit C. I am still waiting to hear of them (Near two months after I sent them second medicals).

I believe it costs to avoid this much delay just by paying some extra cash . Make sure that you undergo all possible examinations, if you wish to avoid delay. this is my recommendation.

Hi...I agree with Alis...get your BMI under the 35 mark...mine was over by 0.4, this has caused me no end of grief, the extra tests cost...and then led to more tests...and a 4 month delay so far...I would probably be in NZ now if not for the 0.4!!!

How did he get on Jameelka?

Just for information, if anyone's interested...I knew I'd be over so arranged the blood tests to be done at my GP so I could look them over and decide if there was a problem before the medical. This was fine and the medical doctor made notes about all my test results being well within normal, despite being over the BMI threshold. I think the bloods cost me £160 (I had them all done at once) and it was worth it as we left our medical with the certificate completed and there was no problem with getting my visa.

eta: sorry Jameelka...judging by your location, he got on fine!

My BMI was 39 when I went for my medical and this caused six months of delay, I had to continuously provide additional medical info from my own GP. Even then NZ immigration in London could not decide and referred my case to a consultant physician in NZ, thankfully by then I had got my BMI down to just over 36 and I was allowed to get my visa....My advice is if you are carrying a bit of extra weight try and get rid of it make sure that BMI is under the 35 cut off immigration make a big issue of it.....

Well we did get through the medicals, and most will probably have read we are over here in Auckland now!
James got his down to the accepted BMI but think anything over then like many others there would have been delays, and we could n't afford that as James started wk the Monday after we arrived on the Thursday! so we had a tight schedule, and luckily everything went to plan.

Hi all,
Maybe it is a good idea anyhow to try to loose some weight with such high BMI's? I would be much more worried about my health then about the panel doctor of NZIS.

So, needing to lower it now - should give you the go to keep it like that or even try to bring it lower?

All the best with these medical tests - they cause a lot of stress for nearly everyone, but most of the time it is pretty straight forward.

Cheers,
Anita
