Warning!
If you come on a Work to Residence visa like we have, and you are bringing a car, like we do, make sure you have an official letter of the NZIS that you have a Work to Residence visa.
The blue sticker in your passport just states Work visa, not WTR, and if you cannot prove in writing that you have WTR they will charge GST on your car.
I called the NZIS, but they cannot help, you have to request in writing to them to send you proof of your WTR, and the friendly lady told me it will then take 20 working days for them to process the request.... :no
Our only option now is the consulate in The Hague who issued our visa, we send them an email to please please fax us a letter to proof we have WTR.
AARGH!

Oh Nienke

Good Luck, I hope you hear from them soon.

Who is asking for it Customs?

Yes, Customs is asking for the proof. It's just adding to the emigrating-stress we already have, and it could cost us a lot of money as well.
And why did they (the moving company) not warn us in plenty of time, but now, when the ship is unloading, and we are out of this furnished rental in just a few days...

Okay, rant over, we'll be fine!

We had to sign to say we would pay GST if we sold it within two years but we have PR.

They want you to pay GST on the value up front? Euck!

Rant away if it makes you feel a bit better though. ;)

Thanks for the hug :yes
It feels good to rant away now and then when stress levels are high...(and most of the rant I did not put online :p )
Yes, they want us to pay up front, as we cannot prove that we are staying in NZ.
Hopefully it will not delay the delivery of our household stuff. The moving company decided to split the container into car - the rest of the stuff. Stuff is going through customs now, and the car stays put for a while.
Now let's just hope that we don't have to pay GST on our household stuff!

Fortunately for us the consulate in The Hague was a bit more flexible and immediately faxed us the necessary proof. So hopefully the car will go through now....
They will deliver our household stuff on the 28th of June. I'm happy about that yet also very impatient. Ah well, just one more week of waiting and we finally get to live in our new home! :cheers
