I have been visiting the forum on and off for over 6 months now, but this is the first time I've put pen to paper (sic). As suggested by my non de guerre, I am creeping towards my middle age - and getting grumpier according to the rest of my family!

I've been in the Electronics industry in the UK for over 20 odd years, and after three redundancies on the trot, I am thinking about the big move. Is there anyone on the forum in my line of business that can give me 'straight answers' to questions I may have about the industry over in NZ? From the dealings I've had with the recruitment agencies in NZ, they seem to be just as unreliable as those in the UK.

On a lighter note. After several months in the planning, we are off to NZ on holiday this weekend. We are going to be touring around most of the North Island, and some of the South Island - just to make sure we like the place! Been looking at the pictures of ChristChurch/Canterbury in the NZ Herald, looks like I'm going to need to pack my thermals.

I know its kind of short notice (I was sitting in the queue for a couple of weeks waiting to be allowed to post - thanks to Douglas for rescuing me), so if any one would like a meet - I'd sure be glad to talk to you about your experiences. Please PM me if you are interested and I will make room in our packed itinerary.

Welcome To The Forum!! Can't help you on the electronics industry in NZ, but if it is the same as the telecomms industry, they want you on the ground before they will offer you a job. The agencies are not as bad as here in my book, at least they will phone you for a chat, whereas here, it is awful.

Wonder where you live? Drop me a pm when you back, have a good time.

Welcome to the forum !!! Send me a PM when you're over here. We're in the Manawatu (14km from Palmerston North). If you're passing this way and would like a coffee just call.

Hope you have a great holiday/fact finding trip and all goes well for you.

Hmmm that's debatable. Everyone will receive your CV with open arms, and then do NOTHING. I've being sweet talking several agencies in NZ for the last 6 months, and not a single interview arranged. It's been an uphill struggle to get (some of them) to understand what you do!

I've updated my profile, and found a snazzy picture for my avatar. So if someone recognises what it is - then they will know what I do!

Looks to me like an oscilloscope which is an instrument that displays electrical signals. I have an old Tektronix 2215 that I use a few times a year to look at signals inside computer equipment.

......and the winner of the picture puzzle goes to jdbob - congratulations!

And, yes I am old enough to remember Orac. I remember a lot of other things as well - anyone remember the Yetti from the Doctor Who series? My family think I made this one up!

Well we've landed. We are presently in the Bay of Islands and just done the Dolphin boat trip - fantastic. A large pod with younsters in the bay. However its now raining - just like home! If this is winter I love it.

Diny and smiler, I will PM you later to arrange a meet.

Watch out for further news & views as we tour around NZ.

Bye for now.
