hello we heard bad things about reefers and specificaly asked our shipper not to send one,but on the day that is what arrived. however the packing guys had just been saying to me that they were the best ones as they are better sealed as long as they were clean and dry. the one that arrived was full of ice and they sent it back . 3 hours later a new clean dry one arrived and they even let me get in and have a look at it. Much later in NZ our furniture all arrived safely no mould no smells no damp everything in one piece .so i,d say if you get one just make sure yourself when it arrives it is clean and dry and do what our guys did and shut the door so you can see if any light comes in while your inside,no light ,no holes, also run your hands along the wall s inside to check for damp. the guys from gb liners did a grand job and i would definetly use them and a reefer again. hope this helps CARDY

I thought that was a dirrerent reefer you were talking about the Vic!! :laugh

Sure there are a few on here who cold qualify for that past time!

Regarding the reefer container, they do have their advantages as pointed out above. If the fridge unit is used, you will have no probs when the box goes through the tropics.

:uhoh Sorry about this but what IS a reefer? i just thought the containers were all the same in 20 or 40ft lengths.

Refrigerated container, the type used to transport meat/frozen goods etc. :)

The container is still 20 foot long ,but the back is a refridgerated section ,completely separate to the part that you use .

So you get a discounted price for using one .

So the inside is still 20ft? or less due to the frozen area? sorry for being dumb. I assume the discount is because the container needs shipping to get it in the right place for it's next load anyway and would otherwise go empty? I will pester the reps about this when i get my quotes.

Me too !!!!

I read the title to the thread and thought 'hell yeah'.

Sorry -I don't have any experience of reefer containers.

Good luck.

(And well done for putting the cleavage to good use - go girl).

hi

its less volume inside - JM have assured me it will be nice & sparkly . I suppose they have to send them back to NZ to fill em up with lamb & send them back here !!!

& stevie D - i'm so innocent i'd no idea what your explanation was - i had to ask mr mossum :p

diny - theres lots of it - it would be rude not to put it to work !!!!

It is slightly less as marie said due to the fridge section. From memory the unit is about 24" wide so I think it is actually an 18ft box (or 38 ft) in total. The container size refers to the total length of the box, as it has to fit in the cell guides on the ship. Internal dimensions are less, depending on the type of container.

So how much less for a reefer?

Hi lupin ,

I've been quoted 3041 - (sorry my pound sign has vanished ) We've a large- ish house here & I'm leaving things like single beds - my washing machine (12 years old & v noisy) Lots of our furniture is fitted here - DH is a cabinet maker . We also have no kids - so non of the associated junk there .

So all in all we actually have loads for just the 2 of us !!!!

I used one

IMHO it’s the best thing to do. You get it a bit cheaper because you lose a little bit of room. Yes it’s basically a giant fridge, because of this it’s in good condition, and it doesn’t leak!

The thing is scrubbed after unloading (its not a cheap freight container so the company looks after it well). No problems with smells, honestly it’s a good idea, go for it.

mossum - did you go with the reefer in the end and if so what was it like?

We are just getting quotes for shipping and Crown said they would recommend a reefer for our stuff as we wouldn't quite fill a 20 footer so it would be cheaper, but the man from John Masons told us they don't use them because of customs problems. But, now that i've found this post I think he may have been telling me porkies.

Has anyone else used a reefer recently and how did you find it?

Olivia

(I don't know why but i can't type reefer without giggling)
