Upon arriving at Auckland airport, do I have a choice of places to convert my US $s to New Zealand dollars? If yes, which one offers a better rate?

Yes, you have a choice. You'll get a far better rate elsewhere, though; airports are not known for offering good currency exchange rates, and Auckland is no exception.

The best rate at the airports is from any of a number of ATM's, even if your USA bank drops a fat surcharge on such transactions. That's NZ$500 or so as you get off the 'plane, per account, which ought to get you started....
