Whilst changing my address for my AMEX Card following the house sale, I said that I would be off to NZ in August and would it be OK for statements to be delivered there. They said that this was fine and if I was emigrating then I should contact the Auckland office and they would convert the card to NZ$ and keep my credit history :nice1 . The office number is +64 9 367 4247.

That is good news. Let me try talking to my DBS AMEX folks and see what they have to say. I doubt if Singapore would be so flexible, though :|

My experience:
Easy to re-open an account when arrived in NZ. You will however have to fill in all the forms again! The credit limit was NOT transferred - for us it was re-assessed dependant on NZ salary.
Amex is widely accepted here - my impression is that the coverage is better as a % then UK. But I am in Auckland.

When I opened a Westpac account I was offered, and of course accepted, a credit card which was based on my UK salary :nice1 . Provided they receive a certified copy of your passport you don't need to be in NZ.
