A big hello to all ,

We,ve just got a sale on the house and am now starting to panic a bit.We havent put our ITA in yet (medicals 12th july) but i need to think about getting everything packed and in to storage,so the first question is can anyone recommend a company in the SE UK and can we take the wine and beer, seeing as we,ve just done a booze run and dont want to waste it, thats if theres any left after we,ve finish with the stress of it all. The next question, Hellmans mayonaise, do i need to stock up? Thats all i can think of for the moment apart from schools ,but ill tackle that one later,

We were advised by the shipping company no to bother taking any alcohol because we would be hit with import tax...so we're just having a big party instead. :cheers

Last UK move we did we ended up paying for storage but it cost a lot. This time when we decluttered we opted for self storage. If you don't mind DIY try a self storage company near you. You have to load it all into your area, (instead of a removal man) but most have a wide range of sizes available. You can store compleat households there. Also you only pay for the time you use, no mthly notice. We negotiated a good rate as we new we would want the storage for a few mths.

I've just had John Masson around today to quote for shipping out to NZ and been told no alcohol in the container unless we are willing to get charged duty on it all.

Next job; plan a party to drink the said alcohol.

P.S John MAsson man was on his way to E. Sussex after he finished here this am. Prehapes to you!

Hi Debbie and Diforsyth,
Thanks for the info, I think weve got to much stuff for self storage, be lucky to get away with 20footer, I dont mind packing boxes but when we moved down here we had nearly 100 of them, and that was just shoes :D (just kidding).Weve been told to bring everything so thats what were doing, as for the wine am having birthday party 15th july which has now turned in to a leaving do as well so we will see whats left. Just looked on customs web site and import duty 5 cents a litre so we will probably take it, its better than buying more when we get there as OH says its expensive.Wonder if theres import duty on Hellmans.

We brought the contents of our drinks cupboard and believe me that wasn't a small amount. It was listed on the inventory and wasn't checked nor were we charged any duty.

I do remember reading a thread on this on here, but can't find it. It stated that there is no duty to pay on 'domestic alcohol'.

When John Mason quoted us they didn't mention it, neither did any of the other shippers.

No tax on Hellmans either. :clap

Thanks Smiler thats great news, must remember to buy more vodka.
Our friends in auckland go to a worrying amount of parties and bbq's so that will save a fortune. Can you tell me where this John Masson is from as he's not on my list, his he just shipping or is he removals as well, weve got 4 booked in up to now Whites are sending out a form? and crown havent got back to me yet,so can always squeeze another one in. Storage is the main thing as we wont be putting our ITA in till the end July, thats if the medcals are ok :( so we will probably need about 3 months,if we get in that is. Keep fingers crossed for the 12th.

Hi - can you put a link up to the right webpage for this - I've been hunting for ages for alcohol import duties (large amounts of red wine and whisky to bring!)

We brought in about 10 bottles of spirits and 25 bottles of wine, and despite MAF taking about 20 boxes out of our container, neither they nor customs were bothered about the booze - no duty to pay.

Sorry, dont know how to do a link, its on www.customs.govt.nz,
Ive just had a quick look and its between $5/10 for beer depening on strength, $3.07 for wine and $20.93 ltr for whiskey.I think you would have to be very unlucky for them to charge you as not many people have had a problem, im taking ours :)

Hi there.
Have you drunk any of the wine since? did it travel OK?
I thought it would turn to vinigar in a hot container for 8 weeks. If it shipped OK then I'll bring ours over and keep drinking the gin. (well that's already open and Im sure that would evaporate or spomething if I had to ship it :) )
