Hello Friends

Can anyone refer me to the thread that talks about what one should do once arriving as a PR, without job offer, in New Zealand?

Should I apply for an IRD number first? After getting a number, is that it? As has been discussed before, then I can apply and work anywhere.

Is there a site that tells about the dos and donts so that I don't make any immigration mistakes?

I guess the rest are basics such as getting a phone line. Sometimes you miss simple but important steps. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi, yes applying for your IRD is a good idea, they guarantee that it will be with you in 14 days, but ours came in a week.

You can start work with out it but you will get stung with the tax.

I would give yourself a month at least to get organised when you arrive here, as things dont work that fast here, and you may find that your plans or where you want to be based will change once you have been there in person for a while.

the most important thing is to find somewhere where you want to live..
concentrate on that before you jump into a job or getting a rental or buying a house,

But once you find a place that suits, you can get set up pretty quick...for us it was 3 days!

Get driving around in a car straight away...Budget car rentals were fairly cheap, but buy one as soon as, to save your money.

Motels are cheap too, in off season, the i-sites have special offers on them (spent a good half hour on the interlander ferry getting vouchers printed that we could use in the coming weeks) and you can always haggle if you pay cash as we have found you can get up to a third off things just by paying cash.

Hope that helps a little

It's easy to apply for an IRD number before you get to NZ:
