We're off to Nelson in September and have been spending many long hours trawling on line looking at houses to see whats around. Is it just me or are all kiwi kitchens in garish colours? Example being we saw a really nice house and the internal pictures were not bad (ie no purple or orange walls, which trust me seem to be out there) and then the kitchen which was stated as being brand new was bright colbolt blue and just solid colour from floor to ceiling. Horrendous in our opinion. Maybe House Doctor hasn't arrived down under yet?!

yep, the house dr has not arrived, i have yet to see a kitchen set up in the haredware stores that isnt a dark colour.

but some of the grey ones look ok, most older houses have wooden ones, from the 50s/60s, so you could always strip them.

depends what your taste is.

Ours was a newly fitted one when we bought house, and its a dark grey/cream colour, mostly cream, but you are right, there are some horrors out there...

I saw a house over here with purple kitchen units and orange walls - I kid you not. Don't panic though - not all like that. Our last house (over here) had wooden units (like pine but a native wood - the name of which totally escapes me at the moment). Our new house has very modern cream units (which look great).

Aubergine was apparently very popular a few years ago as a colour and I think a few people went a bit over the top with it! There's a house we really like and its kitchen is aubergine and blue - obviously we'd change it, but in a strange way, it doesn't look that bad! It makes everything look so dark though!

Seen some shockers. A house we looked at had bright red unit doors and green benches ... looked like it had been designed with a Christmas theme in mind :D

We're lucky even though ours is a late 70's kitchen it has solid rimu doors and tops with gothic style black iron handles and looks really modern.

Thinking of new job in NZ - House Doctoring Kitchens - well at least it gives us scope to put some value on a house if we get rid of horrid colours! We put in a really modern oak kitchen (was an Ikea one) in our house just before we sold it, chrome fittings, dark worktops and glass tile splashbacks, and limestone floor, it was stunning. Purchasers said that was what sold the house to them, only had it on the market 2 days! Tempted to fill the left over space in the container with a Ikea kitchen cabinets! That or large containers of magnolia emulsion!

This is all good news to us !!!

DH is a cabinet maker & did fitted kitchens & bedrooms for 15 years - he is considering going back into it once we are in NZ - I rekon there could be a market for anything with a little taste !!!! Thinking of knocking up bedside cabinets & bookcases & selling them at a market too & taking any jobs that lead on from there
