We can only get 2 and a bit tv channels now :( and I've nearly twisted the OH's arm far enough to get a yes for Sky or My Sky installation.

We gave away our video and DVD recorder before we came and I'm not watching tv here because it is so awful. But we had Sky + in the Uk and I loved it but here it seems a lot of $$. Is it any good?

Is normal Sky any better than NZ TV?

Gulp? Do I wanna know the answer to that one? :wah

Before I hit the ORDER NOW button and take out a small mortage, can any one help please?

Please tell Chloe I'll be wearing my purple shiny braclet if I do. It was much admired down the pub the other night.

It seems a lots of money though (and I never thought I'd hear myself utter those words) :D

OH's eyes lit up when I told him about your home cinema thingy. :raebanana

We got normal sky, and to be honest I watch it during the day with Andrew, cos we have the Disney channel.... but at night we tend to watch "normal" nz telly, but on the plus side, you get a great reception for prime, and I tend to have sky/bbc news on a lot too. (oh and the decorating and cooking shows on Living & Food...)

We are considering converting, maybe when the premiership starts up again, so footie can get recorded...

If you can afford it, I reckon you should treat yourself ;)

Is there an extra monthly payment (Like there is for Sky+ in the UK) or is it just the $599 one off payment for the box?

No extra monthly costs, just installation & normal sky charges

Couldnt live without it! (Well I probably could - but thats not the point :) )

It makes tv watching so much better. We literally win back about 20 minutes every time we watch something cos we skip through the ads (and that does your soul wonders - cos they still run the same ads as when we moved here and im a bit sick of them). And we dont have to panic about catching our fav programs. Just sat down to a leisurley Dr Who, rather than catching last night.

We now tend to watch stuff a day behind at least when its shown. And the ability to record 2 things at once adn watch something else has been great - espcially with 5 adults around.

Now if only I could teach my parents that they dont have start watching something straight away and they can in fact wait 5 mins for me to make a cuppa tea!

No extra charges - in the UK its an extra £10 a month if I recall - so if you only have to justify the $599 instal fee. For us it was great.

Oohhhhhhh - Avalon,

Have they started showing the latest Dr. Who series in NZ now then?

It is the last one of the current series in the UK this weekend - and I am not looking forward to it :(

The series has been first class - I watch about 2 hours of telly aweek so the NZ bad telly won't bother me - BUT I am hooked on Doctor Who - it has been amazing.

Enjoy!

Yeah - we just get it a bit late. First episode of Season 2 was on Thursday. I caught episodes 2 and 3 when I was in the UK and despite (the usual) reservations regarding a new Doctor - loved it. And Ep1 was just as cool.

Its just really nice to have Dr Who back at all!

Have to agree with Avalon (I find myself doing that a lot!) We have it and love it. We had a simmilar service in the US and once you get used to not having to watch commercials and watching what you want when you want you will not want to go back. It is a little pricey but IMHO well worth it. The on screen menus are faster and easier to use than Sky as well. I also think the picure is better than on Sky, did you notice that Avalon?

I'm a Sky+ adict here in the UK. I didn't realise you could get it in NZ :D I say get it... I couldn't imagine going back to not having it. I hate adverts so the price for not having to watch them is well well worth it to me.

Hi Smiler

We have it and love it. I especially love rewinding, pausing, fastforwarding 'live' TV. I really like watching something from 15 minutes in so I can fastforward all those ads (do they really need that many ads??). I'd say take out the small mortgage and go for it!!:nice1
Let us know what you decide.

And: Cant say that I did actually. But I am one of those people that cant really tell the difference between plasma and lcd screens (theres supposed to be one) and normal cables vs monster cables. I sometimes wonder what im missing :)

Thanks for your help everyone.

I'm just checking with the house owners to make sure they don't mind a dish nailed to the side of the house (although the previous tenants had it and took it all with them ) and then I'm gonna make that call. Woohoooo proper telly again. We can only get 2,3 and Prime, no channel one despite an aerial the size of Crystal Palace on the side of the house

Marie I'll have a spare prime channel you can have that. ;) Dumb question, but have you moved your aerial although I'm sure your Dave has already tried that, so feel a bit :o asking.

I have to admit that I am a TV junkie...well at least I was in the States. We had TIVO there and believe it is one of the GREATEST THINGS EVER! One of the big adjustments coming to NZ has been the TV.No offense, it stinks. With that all of that said, I have not been able to rationalize spening $600 for My SKY...perhaps I will change my mind but in the US I got the TIVO box for free and just had to pay $4.95 for the monthly service....It is good to read everyone's reviews here and now I am starting to think about it....

I agree it seems an awful lot of money (and I haven't made the call yet:() compared to Sky Plus in the UK and that sticks in my throat.

NZ TV is awful, in some ways this is good because I'm devouring books and doing other stuff but there have been times when I miss a good documentary or drama or just vegging out with pizza infront of the telly. I enjoy the crime forensic border control stuff but we can't get channel one now, so thats gone out the window.

When I've been visiting people with Sky I just want to sit and watch Ready, Steady, Cook etc though and I'm sure thats not healthy:laugh.

I'll let you know if it's worth it IMHO when the sky man's been.

:no Sorry it won't. We've got Plus and ordinary sky boxes in the garage here, doing nothing.

I can't give you the techie reasons either. :D But I'm reliably told it's to do with standards. However that sounds like something I've been told to shut me up. :roll

We've just moved to a house in Johnsonville- normal TV reception (for those odd programmes worth watching) is AWFUL, so we thought we'd see about upgrading the aerial and see how it compares to the cost of SKY. Admittedly, we want reception in one of the bedrooms as well, but the quote we've just been given............$700+. I can't believe that SKY works out cheaper! Not sure whether with the cost of moving that we can afford MY SKY (although it sounds REALLY tempting) but I see no point paying out over $700, when all in SKY will cost $186 to install!!!!????

Only if it's the Fern Britton version from the 1860's. I can leave Aynsley for coffee.

Theoptom.

Not technical at all.I asked the same dumb question before as we have brought our Sky and Sky + boxes here. I'm now thinking of inventive ways to turn them into something useful, like plant pots or soap holders. :D

Here's the answer from Sky http://skytv.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/skytv.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=295&p_created=1151300707&p_sid=ouDh-sci&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=127&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX 3Jvd19jbnQ9NCZwX3Byb2RzPSZwX2NhdHM9MCZwX3B2PSZwX2N 2PSZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PXVrIHNoeQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1

If you don;t sell your Sky+ Box in the UK (I got £100 for a quick sale, as well as £15 each for normal Digiboxes) then you can alwasy take the HArd Drive out of it and give your PC a bit of spare storage :)

I have just ordered MySky, but won;t be installed til next Monday so will miss the rugby Saturday :(
