Hi all, been here over a week and a bit and weve settled in nicely, been very hectic since day 1 tho in between the jet lag we have achieved a lot.

1st day enrolled the youngest in his school, (which we can see the school entry from our house)
day 2 enrolled the oldest into his school and he was well impressed (less so by the emphasis on sports) downside for him as he has just completed his gcse in Scotland he has to sit them again here :( we had to get the schools sorted as they were going on a 2 week term break, the youngest was half asleep when we visited the school, god help them when he starts
spent the rest of that day looking at furniture for our rental.
spent Saturday looking at white goods and bedroom furniture and spent a fortune (to us) on all the things we needed to live until our container arrives early august.
Went out last sunday for a meal in the rose & shamrock in HN, good place to eat/drink :cheers
Last monday I organised the bank accounts, (tranzfers worked perfectly for us) prior to moving into our rental we organised power, telephone & broadband, and sky :nice1 , we moved in on the monday and it was great at last to have somewhere we didnt need to share with someone after living with in laws & friends , tuesday was in search of a car and we found a nice family size mazda capella , amazed how quick we could pick up the car
Wednesday I organised IRD nos, Contents & car insurance from AMI and was surprised that I had 28 to pay the premiums
Broadband & sky got installed on thursday so I was on the net for a short while, only downside so far was that the PC i borrowed till my own arrived died (motherboard) so that was a hefty expense to buy another PC we could have done without.
The kids are in need of school to make friends as they havent been out much but the people we have met seemed very friendly, I think longer term we will be looking at Napier if we dont settle here, dont know what it is about Hastings but it doesnt hold any appeal for us.
My wife starts work on monday so im at home with them but ive sent a few applications away so hopefully i'll get fixed up soon, we all need to meet some people as although the people are very nice we are need of conversation with locals more than ourselves, but its early days yet.

Weather has been cold at night but very warm at times with strong sunlight, we decided against buying wood as most of the stuff available was wet so weve bought gas heaters and they seem to be doing the job.
I know its early but no one has mentioned homesickenss or anything (im sure they have their moments tho)
sorry for the long post but all the work we put in both here and the uk seems to be paying off.

Cheers Albert,
P.S. looking forward to seeing some of the forum members here soon

Hi Albert

Glad all's going well. Just re what you said about wood. We've taken a couple of deliveries of wood in recent months, which has been a bit damp. What we've done is brought quite a few logs in and dried them out while the fire's lit and by the next day, they're fine to light the fire with it. It tends to dry out ok in a couple of days anyway if it's stored somewhere dry, so please don't let that put you off. It really is a great way of heating the house.

There was a really good thread on here about heating recently (can't find it unfortunately). Someone who is an expert on heating in NZ (runs a heating co) put a couple of very interesting posts about the do's and don'ts of heating in NZ and he said to not use those gas heaters because they are dangerous and that they're banned in just about every country apart from NZ. If you get a sec, you should do a search for it, or maybe some kind person on here might be able to point you in the right direction! There's also probably someone on here who could put you in touch with a good supplier of wood in your area!

There's so much to organise at first, isn't there? You'll get there! Good luck with it all and hope you're settled soon.

Hi Albertz,
Might be seeing you (and others) in Havelock in around 35 days time!
Now can I pick your brains?
How easy was it finding a rental there? Did you find it before you went?
Cheers for now,
Coxy
