Is it true, that employees do not get paid vacation during their first year working for a new employer?

yep sorry! its true, unless you haggle!

but the good news is its going up to 4 weeks!

Also I am sure you can work out unpaid leave for emergancys etc, we have to go pick our boys up from Christchurch in September, and it will take at least 2 days, so I will have to ask for time off (when I get a job!) and so will my OH...lets face it I AM TAKING the time off! they cant do much about it...other than sack me :roll

It really does depend on the employer, we have been lucky, and hubby can take it as he earns it, including in the first year, and was even allowed to go into a minus figure for our holiday to UK.

Spose it depends on the industry too, if there is high competition for staff, not letting them have time off in first year would severely hamper their ability to hire good staff.

I agree with Sal, it does depend on the employer.

Every 2 weeks, I accumulate paid annual leave, and since I started working for my employer in February, I've already accumulated about 10 days, plus 4 extra ones as I also work on some public holidays. Some places will let you take unpaid leave and even accumulate it onto the following year too, I suppose it also depends on the size of the company as well.

I have been told I will get my total annual leave (4 weeks) 1 year after I first started.

Hope this helps :)

It's seems to depend on the employer, I'm moving from UK to NZ branch (even though it's a new job) but they will count it as continous employment, otherwise I would had to have taken holiday at no pay.

Which is good as I need 2 weeks holiday to get married in November!!

Thank you all for your comments. This really gives hope to my OH to see more from NZ during the first year.
