Just wondering what all the OH's do for a living in NZ. By that I mean the one's with out the formal qualifications. I have had a few jobs in the UK but do not have a formal qualification to my name (apart from a city and guilds in auto CAD). I need to work when we get to NZ both for the social side of it but more over for the $ as Lesley's teacher wage alone :no will not cover all of our out goings...........so just what do you guys do to scrape by?......David

We're very lucky, my OH is in IT in Wellington and I'm a stay at home mum to three under 5s. Once all the kids are back at school I'm looking into getting a job with a travel consultancy or back to administration with the Police, yet to decide :) Only got as far as 1 A level and an NVQ so further training required if I want to go into the travel side.

My OH is an Electrician ,he got a job in our first week here in Dec .
Once the kids were settled in school in Feb ,I got a Teacher aide job ,just mornings and school time only [means I get the holidays off too and so no childcare costs].
But still need to earn a few more dollars so I have been on the lookout for a position the full school day ,had an interview yesterday for a high school teacher aide .

My OH has the same job he had when we lived in the UK. He works for an oil company and his 'office' is wherever they decide to send him. Up until last month he was based in Egypt, he's now in West Africa - works month on/month off. His company fly him in and out of Palmerston North now instead of in and out of Manchester - that's the only change for him.
At the moment I'm a stay at home mum, I have a nice big bunch of A' levels and O'Levels, an NDAE (National diploma of agricultural economics), and a bunch of other quals gained through working as a recruitment consultant (mainly supplying staff to the offshore oil industry). We both have 'formal qualifications'.
My sis in law is in the process of buying the village shop/coffee shop and has offered me a job to fit in with school hours - and d'ya know - I might just take it !!

That would be a fantastic opportunity, something if I could get would love to take up especially as it fits around school hours and is in the same village :)

To be honest - I'm quite looking forward to it. She's in the process of looking at the books, getting reports from A,B & C and deciding whether to sell her home (her security) to buy the shop/business.
I hope she does - I think it'll be fun.

Diny, that sounds great. I'd love a job that fitted school hours as Gemma starts school in November and I've no idea what we're going to do during school hols/after school etc. I guess it'll be holiday programs for us.
David, we've both got 'formal quals'. OH is in IT. I'm a nurse.

OH works in financial services. I am presently a stay at home mum with 3 kids, but my old boss in the UK is sending me bits and pieces to do from here and I'm going to be paid in £ which is excellent! I will look for work here eventually but not for a few years. Alex is only a baby and I'd like to have that time with him before he starts school (and yes, I know I'm very fortunate to be able to do this!).
