I guess wondering about details is my way to put up with relocation stress... :o
I've seen a few threads about the difficulties some ladies met to find a good hairdresser in NZ, I hope it's not the case in big cities. We are moving to Wellington anyway and I suppose it's impossible to keep a neat hairdo in such a windy city...
But I have a more precise (and slightly silly) question: is it possible to get henna in NZ? I think it's originally from Maghreb and it's easy to get where we are now (France) but I'm starting to freak out at the idea of using chemicals to dye my hair...
If anyone could answer my silly question, I'd be eternally grateful! :)

Hi Clairibel

I'm in the UK for the time being ,but I used to use henna for my hair when I lived in NZ - it was readily availiable at the health food shop in several different shades .

Just to continue this hairdressing thread......

I'm still in the UK (but not for much longer :nice1 ) and 12 months ago, I changed my hairdresser.

Now, my hair is very fine in texture and has never been my 'crowning glory' however, I have received a lot of compliments about it in the last 12 months and its all due to Amber my new hairdresser.

And yes, she's a Kiwi, born and raised in Dunedin.

So if I can find another Amber in NZ, I will have no worries at all.

Henna-

Yes its readily available. Body Shop do it - in about 2 colours. Lush also do it - but its about twice the price it is in the UK so I dont buy it on principle. Actually most of thier stuff is twice the price :wah

For the best range in welly that ive seen - check out a health food shop on Cuba Street Mall in the city centre. Its on the second stretch up from Manners Mall, on the Right hand side. The henna is at the back of the shop.

For hairdressers - I use Suzanne at George Janis on Queens Quay. I had a few problems with hairdressers, who, while I didnt want my hair cut short - didnt cut enough and left it a bit of a mess. Suzanne is Irish, and trained with Toni and Guy. The only hairdresser in history to persuade me to chop my hair, so its gone from past my shoulders - to a bob - and a greta choice it was too.

Bouy hairdressers gets a good write up (its in the Majestic Tower) but i wasnt too impressed.

I go to Suzanne too. Thanks to Avalon.:nice1

Hairdressers are on a par with dentists for me :wah and I missed my Toni and Guy lady. Suzanne is a very good hairdresser and right funky with it.

They are also open on Sundays. :clap:clap

Glad you liked her. She really chopped at my mums hair too, and she does worry that she may have gone too far and freaked everyone out - but really, certainly for me - its done wonders for my hair.

Thanks for the very precise hints! :)

It took me so long to find THE great haidresser for me in France that I was almost considering trying to convince him to emigrate to NZ...
Maybe I'll try your hairdresser instead! ;)

Thank you!! I was recommended by my old hairdresser in the UK (Sachs) to look for a Toni and Guy here so will give her a try!!

Would you believe, my (wonderful, brilliant) hairdresser actually IS emigrating to New Zealand!! He's 23, of Sicilian extraction and the BEST hairdresser I have ever been to (and there have been many in London, Paris, Milan and Cardiff!) Will keep you posted!

Believe it or not I have been going to the same guy, Harry (seriously that is his name and ironically he is bald now!) in Los Angeles since 1986! And I haven't lived there the whole time. I have lived in Boston and Utah and during that time only 3 other people have ever cut my hair. The first time I saw someone different because I was living in Boston, he butchered me so I had to go to someone else to clean up the mess. After that it was wait until a visit to LA. After a year I moved back to LA so I was safe again. Then I moved to Utah in 1999 and frequently visited so that was alrignt. I did try someone in Utah who was fine but I really prefer to wait to see Harry.

I got a final cut from him in April before I came over and plan to wait until November for another as I have plans to take the new baby back for a visit. So, I still haven't cut the cord! It will be traumatic to say the least. :wah

I'd personally like to thank you all for your support of the Irish hairdressing contingent here in Wellington! And while we are on the subject of hair, being an avid fan of Aveda products, I was quite disappointed that when I enquired about buying Aveda here in Wtgn, I was told there wasn't any and that while there had been one lady selling it, she'd gone out of business. But I found a day spa on the Terrace yesterday which is an Aveda salon and sells all their products and the prices are not a rip-off, actually quite comparable to what they were back home, although they were a rip off compared to costs in the US! Always the way!

If you're interested, spa is called Bodyscape and it's located in Mayfair House, 44 The Terrace. Hey Smiler, think we need some pampering time, whatcha reckon?!!? ;)

Oh go on then, if I have to. :D

OH is still recovering from the cost of your GHD's, so I'll strike while the straighteners are hot, so to speak. ;)

Just wanted to say thank you :nice1

I am very picky about hairdressers and went to Sachs in the UK as had disaster with many hairdressers prior. Anyway, went to Suzanne today after reading this post and would highly recommend her! She's cut my (very unruly and curly hair :o ) brilliantly.

Pricey but worth it!!!

One less hassle to worry about. Next I need to find a dentist...... :wah

Impressed with the dentist in Carterton if that helps anyone!

I've just shelled out $1350 (excluding the initial $80 consultation and $40 for xrays that I had done before being sent to the specialist) for a root canal - so I'd get your dentistry done before you come out if I were you!! The same root canal (in the same tooth which wasn't done properly hence the work redone here.... ) cost me around £280 when I had it done in the UK...
