.......In short shipping of personal effects does not have to be difficult or frustrating. As long as you get told what to do.
In principal there are two ways of sending your goods overseas.
A) via a door to door service, which means someone comes and picks up your goods and moves them from one country to an other. Then clears the goods and places them in your new home. Those sorts of services are usually quite expensive, however the level of service should be up there and the involvement should of the client should be minimal.
B) sending your personal effects as general cargo. This means either yourself or a third party packs your cargo and brings this to a consolidation center. There your cargo is packed in a container together with other cargo, shipped to the other side of the world, unpacked and released to the individuals.
I'm trying to build a web site that should inform someone about these moving cargo to New Zealand http://www.cargo2nz.com
however I have not finalized this matter with our agent in the UK (hence there is no UK option as yet).
If you have friends - family etc. that need some advise on sending their goods and would like to do some work themselves and in the process save themselves some money ask them to contact me.
I can set it up from New Zealand, I will charge them an all in rates whereby they simply deliver their packed cargo to a consolidation center - pay a set price per CBM for their goods.
This set price will included the local PSC charges in New Zealand, which then only leaves them to do MAF and Customs clearance. which for reference cost me $28.70 as I had nothing that needed inspection...or $50 if I had needed anything inspecting
Once MAF and customs clearance is done, cargo can be collected from our depots in New Zealand...this cost me $147 dollars from Chch to Invercargill
If they can't deliver the cargo to a consolidation depot our overseas agent will be able to assist with the collection of the goods, but that would be additional to my rates.
Also I would like to advise people on the quantities of personal goods that they sent. In freight you will be charged on the CBM (cubic
Measurement)
of your cargo.
This is taken from the highest, widest and longest point of the cargo.
Some people sent over an 2nd hand barbecue, beside the fact that the freight on a barbecue is about NZD 350.00 it is also an item of MAF interest, the fact is that a new BBQ only cost NZD 199 ! (just an example).
Lots of people sent 20 CBM as LCL cargo (which means we consolidate this with other cargo) at that level doing a 20ft container might be more cost effective, or place an add in the local news paper and find an other emigrant that wants to move to NZ and share a container together.
As said you can have a look on the web site to get a general idea, any questions sent me an email....(I will PM his email congact if you want it)
Cheers
