OK, folks, we've hopped back on the emigration train, and now I am more scared than ever after reading poor Dave K's post. You see, I am the principal applicant, and will be the one employed as a Skilled Migrant.
My OH, however, does not work out of our home now, he is a musician and makes his living by recording for other people, etc. Long story short, I noticed on the medical certificate, the question "State your occupation and the types of activities you will be performing during your intended work in NZ"
As the non-principal, is this relevant to a decision to accept us for PR?
Can someone please weigh in if their OH came over this way?
We have to have all our ducks in a row this time, there is no room for error.
Thanks so much!

Are you the one applying for a work permit?? only you have to meet the applicants criteria. Once you have your permit your husband should be issued an open work permit allowing him to look for work. (If I remember correctly there is a charge for this!!) Thats what happened in our case.

Actually, I am going for PR, a work permit only is too risky for us to make such a big move. I guess what I'm really trying to ask is, has anyone applied for PR and has a non-working-outside-the-home spouse, and how did they describe what spouse's occupation was on the medicals.
It's confusing I know, but I am scared.

We faced the same exact situation as you two (also going from socal) and: no worries. So long as the principal applicant is claiming all the points, the partner work category is less crucial. However, NZIS still wants to know what the partner will be doing (paid work or not), will not be a burden to the society, is a bona fide partner of yours, etc. regardless of who claims the points. Answering that question on the medical form therefore IS RELEVANT to your evaluation process - but so long as your answer is truthful and reasonable, it won't be an obstacle.

If you ARE claiming points for your partner, that's an entirely different and more complicated situation.

PM me if you'd like more details. Don't panic!

I don't think I am claiming points for him, all my points total either 165 or 175 (once that job comes through!), the only think I put down was that he is English speaking, good health and character, that sort of thing.
I didn't even put down his qualifications, because I got messed up on that last time. So he's pretty bare-bones on the application.
I'll PM now. thanks!

SoCal Gal - I don't know if you have a definite answer to this yet, but I just saw the post, so I thought I'd answer anyway.

OH was the principal applicant and I am a student, which is what I filled in on all the forms (so no income from me at the moment :), and no-one even looked twice at it.

forgot to mention - we applied for PR, not work permit, and no problems

We applied for PR, hubby main applicant, I do nothing (well apart from raise our child!) and we got PR.

PR basically entitles you to do pretty much anything an NZ citizen can do, so if you get PR, your OH will get it too as he is part of your application, and as such, can do as he pleases... including work doing whatever he likes (providing its legal ;))

what if the non-principal applicant is the one who gets a job is there a need to file another eoi or they would consider it and give us a PR?
