Hi, just looking at the Singapore airlines websit and their economy class baggage allowance says 20kg per person. I'm sure some people have said they got their allowances up by mentioning that they had Residency for NZ, any ideas how i can try this yet still book online (as i dont want to walk into a travel agent and pay their commision on top)

(Yes I have been told before that my bum cheeks squeak when i walk :laugh )

Just book online, and then if you ring em with your booking reference they'll upgrade it for you - thats what happened to us anyway!

Yup, we booked online. The only difference is that we emailed them to get our luggage allowance increased. This way I had it in writing!

I printed it out, and took it with me to check-in, that way if they questioned the extra amount, I could show it to them.

They didn't, everything was fine, except our hand luggage was too heavy!

Cheers

Hi
similar thing with us - I booked online and then followed up with a phone call to the Singapore Air customer services at Heathrow telling them that we were emigrating. The lady I spoke to first time said that they don't allow extra baggage so I said that I had heard of people who had managed to increase their allowance as they were immigrants - she said no way no how. I called again the next day and spoke to someone different who increased it there and then but wouldn't follow it up in writing as she said she had made a note on our booking.

We arrived at the airport with heavier luggage than the minimum allowance and it wasn't even queried. The only thing the check in girl did was put "Heavy" on those suitcases it applied to. During the 6 weeks without our container I wished that we'd packed all our cases to the increased allowance!!!

I'd be very interested in this outcome too - we've been told that no-way can we get any more than the 20kg each as we are going to Christchurch and not Auckland.

They only give the migrants allowance to travellers to Auckland, and no amount of 'persuasive discussion' could get them to change their minds   We've had to pare our stuff down below the bare essentials, in my opinion, just to get down to 20 kgs, given the amount of paperwork etc that we need.

Has anyone flown Singapore to Christchurch and got extra baggage, or did you all go to Auckland?

Hi Emily

Sorry, no help - we flew just to Auckland. Good luck with trying to get your allowance increased, though.

Hi

Flew to Chch in May. Emailed customer services and they upped our allowance to 30kg each + the 7kgs hand luggage. Just about to leave home, weighed the bags and they came out at about 150kgs (for 3 of us) :wah. Took it all anyway and at checkin the lady looked at us, said OK that weighs 90 kilos and let us through! She also put priority stickers on the bags so they came off the plane before we did.
I think we were especially lucky but I would try emailing their customer services and see what they say.

Good luck

That seems a bit strange...my boys are flying via dubai/sydney to Chch, they got 40kg each..but with Emirates...

How much did you pay for your tickets....the reason I ask is because I got a good price on our tickets out..ie me and OH, this was with Cathay Pacific, via Hong Kong....BUT we only got 20kg....Because we got a "discounted" special offer price....no amount of pleading would change their mind...unless I upgraded to a MIGRANT TICKET! at a cost of £399 each!!!!!
I decided that £798 would buy us plenty of extra clothes over here...and it did.

Have you looked into sending your extra stuff via excess baggage?

I have to pay 20kg @$5 a KG when the boys come as we are flying internally to Invercargill, but it still worked out easier than a huge drive! :laugh

Good luck,

Kat

HI

We have booked with an agent and are flying singapore airlines to christchurch but business class and I asked the same question about increased allowance the other day, this is her reply

"Yes migrants travelling in economy are allowed double baggage making a total of 40KG. Business class passengers have 30Kg anyway but when I last checked the migrant allowance for Business Class it was still the 40KG"

This has also been put on our tickets (under the baggage allowance) so hopefully should be no problems....

Good luck

Has anyone ever had to pay excess baggage costs with Singapore?

We travelled out (on visitor's visas) with way more than we should have - the check in clerk asked how long we were going for and we said six months - she waived it through.

On our return, we had huge amounts - still just 1 bag each but big bags and really heavy. The check in clerk said it was way over the allowance and the bags themselves were too heavy for their handlers to lift. She called a supervisor to speak to us about excess baggage. We were expecting a large bill .. but surprisingly the first words the supervisor said were - we're not going to charge you even though the bags are way over the allowance, but you must re-pack them to weigh no more than ?? kgs each (can't remember exact amount.

I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has been charged - and what the $/kg rate was. On a different thread a cost of $80 per bag with Air NZ was mentioned, which sounds cheap.

We were quoted excess baggage at £25 per kg extra. Given the fact that we can only have 80 kg for the whole family of 4 - plus hand luggage - we've had to strip everything we were taking right down.

Hi

I read this thread and emailed Singapore Airlines [UK_Feedback@Singaporeair.com.sg] that day and said my family was emigrating to NZ. Within a day they had emailed us back saying that our allowance was increased by 10kg per person (except infants). So thats 30kg per person.

I like SA

Cheers

MMmm. seems to depend on who gets your e-mail then. We did the exact same thing 3 weeks ago and got our 20kg limit raised to 25kg. Perhaps we only got 5kg extra because we are a family of 7 (7x5=35kg extra for free). Still, if it wasn't for this forum we wouldn't even have thought of asking :nice1
