Hi,

Had a guy on from NZ imm today offering to send me the ITA pack and he got onto my qualifications. I thought my C and G Part 2 tech cert would get me in, it says it's a level 4 qual and I sent off my EOI filled in as such.
I had already asked nzqa(?) for assessment but didn't have the results before I submitted it, thinking if it differed then I could change it before being pulled from the pool. However that happened the next day (within hours) so I was unable to alter it. This isn't a problem, the problem is it came back level 3.

The guy asked did I include the level one when I asked for assessment , I hadn't, thinking only the highest qually would count. He said it might make a difference so re-apply for another assessment including part 1. He then mentioned about apprenticeship, if mine had been recognised by a "body". Now back in my day an apprenticeship was only an excuse to pay low wages for a few years and I never had it recognised by anybody. This was alao called being "time served".

He said if it wasn't recognised as such, like modern apprenticeships are nowadays then it is pointless continuing.

Has anybody else overcome these problems?

He did throw me a lifeline which was if i got a job offer then things would be completely different and said about 50% achieve this without going over to NZ.

What is the best was to go about getting a job offer, I would be interested to hear other people's experiences.

Thanks, Alan

Hi Alan

Bearing in mind that I'm as new at this as you are, from what I've read on this forum, and from speaking to various agents, the best way to get a job offer is to actually be in New Zealand. Employers are most likely to want to interview you if you're in the country.

My husband needs a job offer to qualify on points too, and our plan is go to NZ when the time is right (ie the money is right) and apply for jobs then. He'll probably submit his CV online and contact a few recruitment agencies about a month before we go.

That being said, there's nothing to stop you from submitting your CV to some of NZ's job sites and seeing what comes up.

Hope this helps...

Hello
we originally asked an agent to do an assessment for us and they told us we had absolutely no chance of getting into nz without a job.So bull headed as i am i applied anyway without help. I spoke to NZQA and they said send everything for there attention old nvq,s diploma school results everything dont treat anything as trivial. I had an NVQ 2 that i thought was useless but came back as assessed at level 3 and my diploma which was a level 4 came back assessed as a level5 originally i only had my Diploma provisionally assessed by them and thought it would be tight but i got lots of points on the full assessment. When we applied you only needed 100 points and we thought we would be scraping up for them but i got 120 . Dont let them put you off dig everything out .But the other option is to have 2 or 3 weeks job hunting in NZ, i came at christmas for 2 weeks and was offered a job in Wanganui my first 2 days in.I was offered a few others but already had pr so decided to wait till i came back with the family and have a better look. I came to live here in march and had a job within 10 days so the jobs are there .you just need to show the employers you mean business.Standard reply when you ring or email from england is get in touch when you are here and you think there not interested but you tell them you are coming for interviews and see the difference you will definetly get there interst and some interviews..What part of NZ are you hoping to head for? What type of work will you do i might be able to have a fish around for you ? Cheers Cardy

Christchurch looks ideal for us and I'm hoping to find work as a hgv mechanic if possible, but light goods or cars would be a reserve choice. I was surprised to learn from the immigration guy that so many found jobs without going over. He was talking specifically about mechanics so it may not be the same for everyone.

I think I could get over the certificate thing, but it's the "recognised apprenticeship" that would be the problem.

The more I think of it the more having a job to walk into when landing seems appealing. I mean if I can't get an offer prior to going over would there be much more of a chance when landed?

Thanks for your help, and thanks Bergita.

From my view of the employers here so far i think most of them would let you do a work trial test and if you can do it wouldnt be worried about your certificates anyway. I was offered a welding test for a job $80,000 and i havent got any papers for that kind of work.I think most of them just want to know your serious about the move as they get so many who never follow up and make the move . I havent managed a retail store for 16 years and have just been given a job managing 60 people .I,d say keep going and apply for as many jobs as you can.If you can get over for 2 or 3 weeks to do a bit of jobhunting it will answer your questions for you . also you an see if you like the areas you have chosen. i hated Auckland and Hamilton but love Orewa, Cambridge .te awamutu. Cheers Cardy :)

Hi Alan, Do you still have your original signed Apprenticeship documents?

The reason I am asking is that the signed document is the evidence of a "time served"Apprenticeship

My OH did his time at a local bus company, the document is 3 pages, typed on an old typewriter, and signed by the manager, OH and his dad (as he was 17 at the time :D )
This along with his City & Guilds Certificates were what he used for his Qualifications. and they came back as a Level 4 trade certificate.

when we was in the uk...Rob also researched on the internet and emailed companies introducing himself and his skills, most said they would be interested in seeing him when he was in the country.

As to HGV I have no doubt that you would find a job, in NZ you can find a job just by walking into a company and introducing yourself, if you have skills they can use then they are interested.

Rob actually got a job offer in Christchurch from a reccomendation from a Car sales man!...We bought our car of this nice old guy, he asked what Rob did, and 2 hrs later we got a call saying Rob needed to go meet this guy he knew, and yep, even though there was no job advertised, this guy offered to make a postion for him...they don't like to loose talent.

And Rob did the same in Invercargill, it takes guts to walk in to a place cold, but the Kiwis tend to be friendly and look at your skills and work experience in a positive light.

If you contact NZQA and send the whole lot of your certificates, you may be able to get the Level 4 you need,(my basic clait certificates and my Bus admin L2 came back as a L4 computer certificate)

if not, a trip, and a job offer could work just as well, after all its the POINTS that get you picked.

Hope that helps, and good luck,

Kat (robs fast asleep on the sofa :laugh )
