Hi everyone just wanted to share my experience so far of working in NZ.
My first job has been a nightmare!! I have never met such a bunch of moaning spiteful people in my life it very nearly put me off NZ for good and back on the next plane to england .They werent like that with me but each other i have never had the misfortune to work in a place like it in my life.Only found out how many managers had passed through there after i started and believe me i can see why. No team work ,no friendship nothing,Horrible!! for 3 months i have tried to turn it around but i reckon i should have just sacked them all and started again. Its a good job the kiwis we have met socially are a freindlier nicer bunch. Anyway i have got a new job and i am starting on the 14th August cant wait and i have met some of my new team (its a big team i will have 60 staff) and they seem a fantastic bunch. before i even went for an interview i visited the site and had a look around and couldnt believe how well they all got on together, and the interest they showed in there work .I was praying i would get the job and luckily someone must have ben listening because a week later i had an offer . Keeping my fingers crossed now it will change my opinion of the Kiwi workforce. SORRY for the whinge guys just needed to get it off my chest. I like work to be pleasant and fun and it sure hasnt been so far here for me. Cheers Cardy :o

I'd welcome the chance to be moaning or spitefull, im finding work hard to come by in Hawkes Bay atm, maybe im being too impatient but I didnt come here to be unemployed, 1 employment agency said they had no vacancies :( which I found hard to believe, full employment??.
However i'll keep trying cos I like a fight and i'll get there in the end :D

Well done on trying to do something about being landed with a bunch of moaners. Was it a longstanding team feud or did they just not care? (I can't remember what you your job is sorry).

Good luck with the new job in August. :nice1 I bet you can't wait for this one to end.

Albert. Good luck to you too. I hope you find something real soon. :nice1

Soory to hear you had such a tough time Cardy.

We have seen both sides of this. Hubbys first job was with great people; welcoming, enthusiastic, good at thier jobs, and utterly dumped on by the company and lousy pay. The new job is kinda the opposit; good pay but lousy bosses (some things dont change), lazy staff, unfriendly and unwelcoming.

I hope your new job is better for you

Hi all,

Just want to wish Albertz good luck for the job hunt.
I know the feeling, as i have been there.
Did they give you any reason, why there are no suitable jobs for you?
Mine was no NZ experience.

And all the best for the new job Cardy.

I only lasted two weeks in my job! Couldn't stick it at all and have been a lady of leisure ever since.

I always worked in the UK (part time when the kids were little) and I felt really guilty for not working here. Now though I'm getting into the swing of being a stay at home Mum and I've got my parents here for a month long visit so am not even thinking about working!

It makes such a massive difference if the atmosphere is not right at work doesn't it. It really put me off I must say and my confidence was completely knocked sideways.

Hope you'll be very happy in your new post Cardy. All the best to you.

Alison

Thanks Alison it does knock your confidence you wonder if its your fault and if your just a whinging pom . but i have had quite a few jobs and never felt an atmosphere like that. my new place feels good even though i,ve only been for two short visits. Its a nightmare at the moment working my notice but at least i can see the light at the end of the tunnel . Cheers Cardy :cheers

Forgot to say my wife ,bev hasnt managed to even get an interview yet so shes feeling a bit out of it . It doesnt help that she cant drive but even the local employers dont seem interested and she has more qualifications than me so your not on your own Albertz. she cant believe nobody has even wanted to see her just gets no thanks letters. Very disheartening but she is a fighter too so im sure it wont be long before something comes along. Cardy :)

Cardy, I can understand your wife's feeling cos' I have been there before :( . The thing that I do to overcome this is by working as a temp and with the so called "few weeks of kiwi experience", I could secure a permanent job.

Hi Cardy,

Think my wife and yours are in the same situation, lots of qualifications and no jobs.
The job agent told her that, maybe she can't get a job is because shes over qualifield

Singel,

How did you find the temping route .. were the agencies good? plenty of jobs around? any tips or pearls of wisdom for us?

Thanks,

Dawn

Hello Dawn

It is advisable to register with a few temp agencies and it is important to go for reputable ones. When I say register meaning I have to sit through the tests on MS Word, MS Excel, Typing, English, Mathematics and Filing. The tests and interviews will take about 3.5 hours.

The 3 agencies that I find really good are Drake International, Martin Personnel and Manpower. There are plenty of temp jobs and the rates are good. If you don't mind irregular income and short notice, then temping could be a career. A temp is entitled to earned vacation days and sick leave (if temp more than 6 months) including public holidays.

The NZ employers do recognise these temp jobs as working experience in NZ.
