Hi Everyone
We are going to Nelson for a visit during September and would like to know if you can rent travel cots and car seats as we don't really want to bring them with us (they are not exactly light items).
We are able to borrow a car during that time but wondered if car rentals can rent JUST the car seat or whether it is worth buying one and leaving at relatives house?
Also wondered if they have car boot/ markets where 2nd hand travel cots can be found (maybe get relatives to buy one) or whether rent somewhere?
Lots of questions (sorry) but trying to save the amount of weight we will carry. Any feedback will be really appreciated. :D

You can hire car seats from baby shops, but for the travel cot, you may need to get someone to buy one off Trademe for you to use, there are always some on there, heres a few sites.

Just noticed that one hires cots too...
Heres another one..

Hope that helps...

Should have added, you need to make sure the car you are borrowing has the bolt fitted in to boot to attach the car seat to, they cost about $10 to buy and a further $30 to get fitted if they are not already there.
All car seats here have tether straps that have to be bolted in by law.

you could check with the car hire companys...but yes, try Babyworld...In Invercargill you can, as I am going to hire one when my granson comes in January, if I remember it was about $30 a week...but dont quote me, my brains a bit lax, as its full of insecurities of starting work tomorrow :uhoh

Thanks for that, Im now wondering in my UK car seat is legal in NZ, I have no tether stap on mine that Im aware of.
Do you have any further info on this. I was worried about how to get the car seats from the UK to NZ but if they aren't legal then that raises another issue.

Your UK car seat is fine, cos they dont have these straps, its only ones sold over there that have them. If they dont have the strap then you cant bolt them in anyhow, so no problem.

Don't worry about your UK car seat not being tethered. We bought over 2 and had no problems. Police and Plunket do spot checks from time to time and as soon as they see that I've got European standard car seats they're really happy. It seems only NZ made car seats come under that rule from what I've seen.

Thanks very much for the info, I will bring the UK seats with me, I know how they work and we paid a lot for them in the UK.
Like you suggested on the other car seat thread I will wrap and bag them for the airplane hold. We have treated ourselves to bussiness class seats so no point in my daughter sitting in her car seat having paid out for a big comfy seat for her. Will call the airline tomorrow to confirm they are OK with that.
Thanks again, one less thing to worry me at 3am.

I wouldn't go with any carseats from car rental firms. We hired some when we spent the weekend in Chch and they were awful. I'm not even sure if they were safe :no . In future I'd take the ones we have with us.
And I found this website some time ago for hiring baby things in NZ - I've never used them but they might be worth a look http://www.babyonthemove.co.nz/About+Us.html
