I cannot find a recent thread on rates and other tax's including those required for a vehicle in nz.

Is there a link someone can direct me to or can someone answer the question... approximate figures or formulas would help.
Thanks

Here's some info on cars etc

http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/vehicle-ownership/registration.html

If you have a diesel car you also pay tax on the mileage you do, but someone else may be able to explain that much better then me.

The rates for houses differ depending on what area you are in but there is a search facility for wellington on here

http://www.wellington.govt.nz/services/rates/index.html

I understand rates are based on the vaue of your home and land but I still cant get a feel for 'how much'.
Say you have a house in Welly valued at 300,000 can you give me an estimate.
What about 500,000 and does size matter i.e acreage.
Thanks
Dee

Hi Dee

I can't help specifically sorry, I haven't a clue what ours is as it's included in our rental.

This thread gives a little help http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=7149&highlight=council+rates Avalon's post gives a little insight into how it works but but I'm sure someone who knows much more about it will be able to answer.

Or if you see a house for sale of the style and area you are looking for, you could email the agent for a figure.

Rates are based on land value or capital value, the latter includes the land value plus the "improvements" made to the site - e.g. the house! So you could use the asking price of a house for sale as a guide - although read the other threads here on house prices first!

There are several kinds of rates, some only apply to specific areas, as they are collected to fund local projects and activities. Some use the land value only, some the capital value. Mine (Waitakere City) are paid in two parts - the largest amount goes to Waitakere City Council, a much smaller 'regional rate' is paid separately, directly to Auckland City Council. I think similar systems operate elsewhere.

So for example, the Wellington regional rates and the local council rates for Hutt City are here:

http://www.huttcity.govt.nz/council/rates/current.shtml

There's an example on the page - interestingly my rates are not calculated like that at all

Anyway, hopefully the other local councils will provide similar information. Hope this helps.

Thanks Jaycee & Smiler,
It looks as though they are approx one third of what we pay in the UK - which helps us to determine budgets etc.
Many Thanks
Andy & Dee
