Just wondering if anyone knows how much it costs to list a house with an estate agent in NZ. I've heard it's a lot more than in the UK.

May seem like a strange question to anyone who knows I'm in a rental at the moment, but our landlord is thinking of selling up and he asked if we wanted to buy the property. Initally my thoughts were that it would be too expensive, as it needs a bit of work done to it, but if we could negotiate a price it might be worth considering. Obviously we could save him estate agent fees, but how much is that really worth?

Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Karen

Fees are around 4% of the sale price, so you could be saving him a good chunk of money, I think there are other fees too, that cover marketing/advertising, but not got a clue how much they are.

May be an idea to get a valuation done for yourselves so you dont overpay for it if you are not certain of the right kind of price

Get the house valuation done online : https://www.qv.co.nz/default.htm
I understand that it costs only a few dollars for the report.

Yeah, be careful, estate agents fees are generally around 4% of sale price, plus more if you want special marketing.

There are other alternatives to using estate agents, but you have to know what you are doing.

I think 4% is way too much for what they do, especially now prices have gone up so much in the last 3 years. There are new market entrants such as the "Joneses" who are trying to undercut the traditional agents.
