I wonder if someone could please do me a favour.....?
Next time you are out shopping, could you please check out the prices of feather pillows and feather/down duvets, 10-12 tog.
Our bed size is a UK super-king (thats 6 foot x 6 foot 6 inches) and I think that the equivalent to a NZ king size.
Our feather pillows and winter quilt could do with replacing, so I would just like to compare costs.
Yes I know that there is a query over bringing feathers in the container, but I'm going to fetch 'em anyway......lol.
:cheers

hi julie,
I packed some pilliows & double duvets & covers into the boxes that I sent, they travelled fine...cheap holowfibre ones thou for the boys beds
But we had to get a duvet for our bed when we moved into our rental. we bought a WOOL duvet...there are loads of them here, and it is quite good, its warm, but light, but I have no idea how it will be washing it...(didnt read the instructions) but then you cant wash a down one either.
Double bed size duvets are the same as the UK, and a Queen is a square shaped duvet.
heres a site with all the sizes on....

Flannel / Flannelette Sheets
Before use: It is important to wash flannelette sheets before you use them. Soak them overnight in cold water for at least 16 hours.
oops thats why we had bits of fluff everywhere :o :laugh :laugh

Hi, we bought some recently but I can't remember the price - sorry!
But this is a link to an online department store that sell duvets/pillows etc:
www.stoffels.co.nz
You can probably get them cheaper elsewhere, but it should give you an idea.
Cheers

oh and sheets...the high thread types, are roughly about $200 - $100 dollars! but there again, buying posh ones from Binns would cost a packet too.
I got given a set of flannelette sheets, cost $79, and they are a decent thread count, the ones from the warehouse cost $35 but the threadcount is crap, and you can see that you definately get what you pay for.
tip is to get them in the sales....hope that helps

We've decided to use our old quilts and pillows here and then dump them and buy new when we arrive - we'll need them in the rental so seems the best way round - if we bought new here and put them in the container we'll have nothing when we are in the rental??!! :o

Totally agree and that was in my mind too, but with our bed being a waterbed AND a super king size, I was concerned about the bedding sizes more than the prices to be truthful.
Not worth bringing the bed if we can't get the bedding to fit.
With it being a waterbed, you can't lift the mattress and tuck in a sheet - they need to be fitted base sheets......... :o Didn't make that very clear on my first post did I.......... :roll
Although the bed is the usual 6'6" long, it's 6 foot wide. Super king size bedding here is not only expensive, but it's also quite difficult to find in 'regular' shops, so it's not like you can get a 'sale' bargain.
I was hoping that the size would be more readily available in NZ and if that were so, then the prices should be better than here.
*note to self* forget feet 'n inches....don't show your age - convert to metric.

re bed sizes, I actually found it hard to find Double bed sizes, the norm seems to be Queen, but it didnt phisically fit into the boys rooms, but i had promised them doubles at least...they are getting a bit big for singles now.
I dont think you will have a problem findin a big bed, and they have super mattresses too.

John Lewis will export sheeting to any country ex vat in the post. They will even describe the colour over the phone and run around looking for items for you. We too have a waterbed and find the sizes difficult, but ours is soft sided so the sheets clip in. They do super kingsize sheets fitted & flat in their own range and they are really good quality but not expensive. They will post to anywhere. If you have time send them ahead.

This takes you to their tax free shopping site. I buy Cotton polyester mix as you don't have to iron and no little bobbles. As I am princesss and the pea kind of girl :laugh

Angel.
Ours is soft sided too, but don't know what you mean about the sheets clipping in ???
To all intents and purposes, our mattress just looks like any ordinary mattress, but because of the weight, I certainly couldn't lift it to tuck in any flat sheets and even if I could, I don't think that they would tuck in far enough not to move.
Am I missing something here??...........

We too have a water bed and I have tracked down a water bed shop in Auckland which services them etc. Unfortunately, they don't sell linen (I emailed to check), so thanks Angel for the john lewis link: that's where I buy our superkingsize duvet covers. We got our sheets (no clips either Julie) from a supplier in Newport, South Wales, the nice fitted ones for the deep soft-sided water beds. Will try and dig out the link.
Anyway, here's the Auckland shop, hope it helps someone: http://www.waterbed.co.nz/index.shtml

OK - there seems to be a lot of water beds out there. Am I missing something? I know Julie has already told me I can't get sea sick on them :o ... but what makes them better than a normal bed?
Sorry Julie for taking over your thread but I need to know!! :roll

Nicola,
Have a look at this (and it's local!) http://www.aquastatus.co.uk/hygiene.htm
It might let you into the big secret....
I gat "bedsores" when I stay away in hotels with "normal" beds. Plus you can breastfeed in them quite happily. Wouldn't swap mine for anything!!

Nicola.
Take it from me, waterbeds are not a luxury - they are a necessity !!
Not only do they give you the most comfortable nights sleep EVER, but because you can regulate the temperature of the bladder, they keep you toasty warm in winter and cool in summer.
The hygiene part of it is marvellous - no bed bugs mean no wheezes or sneezes.
Since getting ours, I have never slept as well in my life. Even Steve (OH) has commented on the fact that I'm asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow...... :uhoh :D
Seriously. they are fantastic and when we get to NZ, I will be counting the days until my container arrives with my bed.
Go on, treat yourself - you know you want to.

ps.
You can get water pillows too I believe.........has anyone tried those ??

Zardell & Gil
Ours has a foam edge with a split mattress and if you lift it just underneath the foam, ours has a gap that squeezes the sheets in so that they do not keep coming out again. Have not tried fitted sheets on it only flat sheets.
I agree with all re comfort, hygiene and not being able to sleep on an ordinary mattress anymore.
I too won't be able to wait for our container to come. Thanks for the address for waterbed suppliers will get water conditioner for when it arrives. Last time we had to get this special stuff not sure what it was called as it made my mattress go stinky after we filled it. Something in the water and bacteria so if you get a funny smell you need to buy an extra chemical for it. :nice1

Oh thanks for that Angela....that's something I never thought about. All our local 'waterbed man' said to us was to put in 2 bottles of conditioner after we have emptied the bladder.
Mmmmmmm will make a couple more call and see if I should put some other chemical in to kill bacteria etc.
I emailed the Auckland shop a couple of weeks ago and to replace our super -kingsize bladder and have it delivered to any part of the N.island, inclusive of gst., the cost was £425......a bargain imho and a safeguard in case something goes wrong.
:cheers
