The figures turn a Hawke's Bay myth on its head. While Napier residents have for generations looked down on Hastings, the port city led its neighbour in eight of the 11 categories.

Think this is interesting (http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3742237a11,00.html) because the general consensus on forums seems to be that Hastings is a less "safe" place to live than Napier. These statistics suggest otherwise.

Thanks. Very interesting. I always thought Napier and Hastings would be the other way around!

I live in Napier and while I don't see either city as being particulary crime ridden, Hastings has no appeal to me as a place to live. I would point out that Flaxmere (a part of Hastings) does have a higher crime rate than other areas and does tend to reflect badly on Hastings.

My husband is a forensic nurse and spends at least 2 days a week in both Napier and Hastings courts. He also thinks Napier is a far better and safer place although, of course, crime is not selective to place.

I will say that as to the feel of the 2 places Napier was a lot nicer IMHO.

Napier's just prettier, that's all. It makes it seem as if it's safer.
Interesting that the stat's for the two "cities" aren't closer though

So do you mean that Napier is as unsafe as Hasting ??

Napier doesn't even make the top 10 for murder and rape - Hastings does! :yes

Well, looking at those stats you can choose between Hastings, as willsken points out, with a *relatively* "high" murder and rape rate (although these are fairly rare crimes) or Napier with more aggravated burglaries, minor assaults and car thefts (which are very common crimes).
Take your pick....but those stats suggest you are more likely to be a victim of crime in Napier than Hastings (although there may be other crimes not reported there which Hastings is much worse for(?))

(Actually we did have our car broken in to when we lived in Napier  )
