Sorry if this has already been discussed.

Do the NZ kids go out on Halloween. We took out my youngest on Sunday night, just around a few of the neighbours. Not "trick or treating", but Guising they call it around here. The kids have to sing, recite a poem or tell jokes for their sweets.

I think Callum will be disapointed if he can not go Guising next year.

I don't know if they go out trick or treating as we are not living in a residentual area, but there are masses of costumes for sale in the shop so something goes on.

Hi Nicola,

The kids in our area dress up and go knocking on doors...for lollies (sweets) most just don a mask..bit pathetic really!

They usually go in groups so parents dont have to go!!! My neighbour always has a party with her garage becoming a haunted house so you can imagine how busy our street is! (it is like a cul de sac) and all the kids love it.

We have devised a way of letting the kids know which houses are 'into giving stuff' and each year if you want the kids knocking, you put a photocopy of a spider (that the neighbour with the party had delivered to every letter box within the 4 closest streets) that you put on your letter box to let the kids know you are happy to contribute to rotting their teeth!

It seems to work and this was the 3rd year of it, then no one gets bothered if they dont want to play (and the worse tricks are water pistols...it is all just fun here..no eggs/ slashing tyres etc..but the kids know not to go to the houses without the spider..not even to do a 'trick' cos you will proabably get yelled at!)
