Folks,

We are in a bit of a troubled state at the moment. We got two quotes in to move our stuff from France to New Zealand and the prices we got were way out of our budget.

One quoted 5300 euros for space upto 20m3 in a 20ft container. The other quoted a sole container of 6300 euros (upto 30m3).

We can't afford either of those prices so I'm trying to figure out ways to haggle with them in order to try to bring the prices.

I was wondering from people's experiences on what hints or techniques they used in order to try to reduce the price as we are getting kinda desperate at the moment.

Cheers

We used Upak we Ship (which cost 55 uk a box) - so ended up much cheaper

Took a while - but everything did get here eventually

Word of warning though - get GOOD insurance that will cover your goods if not packed by a professional mover - we made that mistake

Have you tried telling the higher price one that X are offering to do it for 5300 euros.

Just don't mention the size X estimated ;).

Our shippers estimates varied in cost and size and I haggled only on price.

Yeah exactly, I guess belly button hair doesn't count?!? :)

I'm thinking of trying to look like my new avatar when haggling though....I've got the ginger hair!!!

Hi Smiler,

Good idea! Might give it a go.

Hi G&K,

Yeah insurance is something we are worried about. For example, we know that if we pack and have a breakage then insurance won't pay anything.

One thing that I found strange was the unpacking in NZ. All have offered a service to unpack all of our boxes in NZ. Wondering if this is an insurance thing? i.e. so they can prove whether things were broken or not?

Anyone experience that?

Hi Starkhorn

The unpacking thing is normal but not usually carried out in full at destination. You will find most companies will unwrap your furniture items and remove the rubish. It is normally easier for you to unpack your own cartons in your own time otherwise you get in a big mess. Most companies will return to collect the empty cartons at a later date but you need to check on this. You also need to check on your insurance policy what is required for unpacking. I have heard of some saying that the goods must all be unpacked and checked on delivery but you are more likely to have a set time to check and make a claim which can be days, week or even up to one month.

Are both companies quoting on the same volume and have you had a survey done?

I'd go along with Smiler, I had several quotes for a 20 ft container and like smiler has suggested played one against the other to good effect and achieved the desired result.
