We are due in NZ in about 5 weeks time, and are wondering how far in advance do we need to start looking at rental properties? We are lucky in that we know people already in our town (well it WILL be our town when we get there) who could go and view rentals on our behalf before we arrive, but how far in advance should they start doing this?- we dont want to start paying rent for something whilst we are still in the UK, but dont want to be in an NZ hotel or friends house for a month either.

How long did it take you guys who have rented to move in after viewing?

We are going to Whangarei by the way- in case any of you have a rental there available 8th sept :D

It might be a good idea for your friends to view some if they can. It does mean they could weed out the dross, that would save you time when you get here. If they see a fabbo rental, you could work something out with the agent. :nice1

I think it was Dawn who put a bond on a rental from the UK, on the condition it was acceptable when they viewed.

We got our keys to the first rental on the same day and waited 2 weeks to move into this one. Well it did have tenants at the time :laugh

Hi we rented with North Shore rental, viewed on Tuesday moved in on Saturday. They were happy to do long or short term rentals, which was great because as soon as we found a house we gave a months notice, so we weren't tied into a long contract.

Do you have a link for North shore rentals as we are heading that way but need a short term rental that will take kids and dog. Any help appreciated.

6th September ... seems to be THE day for a lot of us, we are booked on NZ1 from Heathrow, coming in via Edinburgh on the morning. I'm a returning kiwi after nearly 10 years with Brit OH ... we'll be the ones with huge grins on our faces and probably carrying over the allowance for hand luggage!

Lynne,
Are you shipping the dog and if so who with. I have recommendations from golden arrow but the cost and practicalities of using them are mounting up. We won't have a car to drop the hound off ourself and with the cost of them collecting we are looking at nearly £4000 with out kennelling. :wah
See you at heathrow, I'll be the one with the 2 manic kids as they won't have slept the night before because they've been in a strange hotel room. At least once the mania burns it's self out (around Bangkok) they should sleep for the next day.

Hi Debbie
Have you tryed "Airpets" 01753-685571, www.airpets.com
We had a quote for 1 medium size dog. They would collect from us in Devon and provide the crate. £2100.
We are hoping to go to Christchurch and airpets was recomended by Kats&k9s, a kennels in CHCH we are hoping to use.
Good luck, Let me know if you find cheeper.

Debbie, seems like we've hijacked this rental thread but just quickly yep the dog is coming with us - 2.5yr black lab b@tch (can I say that here!). We are going with Golden Arrow and they are collecting her from us on Berwick (borders) on 4th Sept, and she is flying on NZ1 also on 11th Sept. All inclusive with freight, all the medical (so easy with them they just send you the packs to do the poopy scoop x2 and bloods from the vets) and collection just on £2400 - £390 of that was the collection. We have no kids and my OH has trained her to the gun so after all that hard work no way we're going to leave her behind. Mind we will be breeding her next year so maybe you can save your £ and buy a pup off us in a year's time - say $1000 to friends?! Got to recoup the cost somewhere!
