Hello Guys,

Am one week or so into living in Napier. Initial impressions are lovely though the hayfever is already noticeable! I tell myself every day that I am here to LIVE not on an extended holiday in a vain effort to reduce the fall people predict you get 3 weeks in when you figure out that every place has its problems.

I have met the boss of the surgery that all being well I will start to take over in 6 months. He has now left NZ to go back to Oz but flew back especially to give me a 3 day tour of Napier, its people and to introduce us to his friends. I can't say that someone could have done more to specifically help integrate us. The surgery is dynamite with a very good team.

We have been living in a motel but just secured a lovely rental that we will use as a temporary base as we are looking to jump into the housing market while the middle to top end houses have levelled off a bit.

Having no regular internet access I am squeezing this in between patients so apoloigize for now browsing other threads to help others, but promise when I'm officially online.

The staff here have all volunteered furniture etc till our stuff arrives.

To help get us into the frame of mind that we actually do live here, my car from Genuine Vehicle Imports already has problems. Now here is the rub.. we all praise an easy sell but what happens when things go wrong? Well, the company has really tried though we are 500km away to get the problem sorted. It is in reality a minor problem that you can't predict will happen even with a AA check. They so far have handled it very fairly and we have been told that we won't pay a penny (cent?!!) for it to be fiexed. They even said that even if the problem wasn't covered by the warranty, they would pay. In the UK dealing with a garage my blood pressure would be a lot higher!

Basically the people so far seem open, friendly and helpful. Things are more relaxed and even the local press seems more chilled out. Our local Magpies rugby team got trounced 45-0 against one of the top teams in the first game of the season yet the press headline had nothing but praise for them.

Home sickness hasn't really been an issue for me as I have so much to take it at the moment with getting in synch with a whole new medical system, finding a rental and getting in touch with financial planners etc. My wife felt a little homsickness last night.

People keep telling me to slow down and "enjoy the bay", but it can be a little hard when you are in a motel (albeit a lovely one). We have treated ourselves to their jacuzzi in the night most nights. Well actually, the ones where we weren't invited out to dinner. I really need to watch my expanding waistline.

The Hawkes Bay white wines are very good and the reds are moderate. There is a growing cafe culture here that seems very relaxed and unto its own. I have to say that I have not had a bad meal here so far. Every meal has been good-excellent versus the "it's ok" I was so used to in my local town at home.

The bank has been very helpful and...

oooppsss!.. next patient has arrived.. will add a bit later..

Sounds like things are going well for you, hope the '3 week blues' doesn't hit, but if it does just ride it out, it'll pass.

Keep up the good attitude.

Please ask the patients to wait outside while you update us, much more important for our health. :laugh

Good to hear you are both settling in. Sounds like you've made a fantasic start (apart from the rugby) and may it only get better. :nice1

Oh I am so pleased for you . You make it sound as if its been a lovely way to introduce yourself to kiwi life, hope it lasts. Motel with a jaccuzi mmmmm

I know what you mean about food out there. On our 6 weeks trip we had some great meals. One we stopped off at 9pm on-route and it was just the only restuarant in town which was excellent. Mind you could not tell you where it was. North of Rotarua but it had a huge painting on the wall of a balcony scene and you could not see their was a door to the gents in the middle of it.

Let's hope you find some nice red hawkes bay that is not moderate

The last two days have felt the most like we actually live here now.. the rental property now has a phone line and electricity in our name and the initial flurry of making arrangements has ebbed a little, giving us more time to "Slow down and enjoy the bay".

One piece of advice that I hope might make the passage easier for you if you haven't heard it already (and if you have the ability), is if possible for one of you to stay off work for a little longer on arrival.

In an ode to my wife, she has deliberately held off getting a dental hygiene job till we are settled. When I finish work, the shopping is done and dinner is on. Sounds a little sexist? Well, if I earnt significantly less, I would do the same (and will do when she starts). Things like not having to think about getting to a laundrette after starting work in a new system is really stress relieving. She really has been a rock for me this last year and in as much as I thank you chaps I think I forgot to thank her. So, if you can, get one person to settle into a job, one person to settle the house stuff, then both jump in if you want. That's my cent's worth (see I didn't say "penny").

Nadine.

That hubby of yours just wants all us female forumites to tell him what a kind and considerate hubby he is and how generous it is of him to thank you publicly on this forum........

Well OK KJ, you win......... ;)

You are a kind and considerate hubby.

Seriously though, I know where you are coming from and you're right - where would you men be without your other halves ?? :p

Hey KJ,

Well, I'll be even-ing(sp?) up the male to female ratio on that score in a couple of weeks. Me and Nadine will have to swap cookie recipes....
Glad to hear you're settling in OK. Has the jet-lag worn off yet?

See you soon,
Coxy
P.S. Guitars went in container in the end, so not arriving till middle of September (Jam session will have to wait :wah ) . Our packers said they've put loads in before (32 for an ACDC session musician alone!) and that if they had warped in the past then the shippers would be recommending not to put them in and you wouldn't be able to insure them.
