Hi all, I have recently been offered a job in the New Plymouth area with a starting salary of $75000. My question is:Is this enough of a wage for two to live on in NZ. Hope someone can help.

Hi

It does depend on your circumstances, whether you will need a mortgage, etc (int rates are much higher). But in general for just 2 you should be fine.

Best of luck

Sue :)

Yes!!!
Obviously it depends how extravagant you are, but we're surviving on less than that, and we're certainly not denying ourselves things - we're being sensible, of course, but by no means having nothing

I have just spoken to an ex-neighbour who lives between UK and NZ, and she felt NZ$1 has a similar buying power to £1 in UK! So $85000 - $100000 is equivalent to same in pounds?
Can this be true? That would make $100,000 a very good salary?

Hi Mels - welcome to the forum.

I really don't think thats the case at the moment. We've done some pretty thorough investigations into cost of living / housing etc and I'd say the buying power of the £ is probably more like $2? Its certainly not 1 to 1. However, $100k is still a very good salary.

Thanks Trigirl,

My OH has just got a job offer in Wellington so I am in a panic over schools (for 8 and 11 yrs), places to live, cost of everything from moving to bananas! and getting there by November. At the moment I wonder whether it's just too much.

I know eveyone must go through this - please tell me they do!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We’re hopefully off there in October/November. As soon as I sell the house anyway! We’ve been looking at places to live (probably Kilbirnie / Hataitai / Wadestown for us). I’m going to be working in the CBD so I’ve been investigating buses and things too. Luckily schools aren’t as issue as we don’t have kids! One less thing to worry about.

I’ve found http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-me-property/index.htm really good for getting an idea of house prices and locations, rental prices etc.

Also there are loads of serviced apartments in central wellington to get you started over the first few days http://www.tourism.net.nz/region/wellington/wellington---wellington-city/accommodation/apartments/

Plus there’s a really good cost of living calulator on this site - http://www.emigratenz.org/cost-of-living-in-new-zealand.HTML

Sorry – you probably knew all of that anyway – as you can probably tell I’m a bit overexcited about the whole moving thing at the moment. And yes - everyone does the "is it too much" "oh my god what am i doing" thing.

I'm sure that's a fine salary for two :)

If not, then the four of us are sunk :laugh
