What are the tax implications / legalities with shipping a PC (less than 9 months old) to NZ?
I heard that if the computer is less than a year old - customs will apply GST to the value of it.
Should I sell and buy a laptop? Shipping a PC from Canada to NZ would cost me - $300NZ? Maybe the PC isn't worth it then...

Providing you are a first time migrant and the computer is not brand new then there will be no GST or Duty

I brought in two laptops with us as carry on luggage. I then shipped 7 PCs in the container, along with 6 monitors. Customs asked me whether they were for business purposes as you then have to pay some sort of tax. But as they were personal items then they were fine with them, and MAF didn;t even look at them. At least one was less than 5 months old.

my kids are stripping theirs, putting the bits in their cases and putting the lcd monitors in their hand luggage.
Cases are about the same in NZ but actual components seem slightly more expensive, so they are bringing the bits with them and buying a case and power supply when they arrive.
I asked if this was ok and both the airline and customs were fine with it.

Have friends who left 6 months ago and bought a new computer from Dell before they left and their old one wasn't worth packing. When it got delivered set it up to make sure it was all ok and registered licenses etc and then just repacked it and put it in the container. Apparently wasn't even looked at.
