Was just wondering if kiwis do halloween! We don't make a big deal of it - & I can deffinately do without the candy :o - but the magazines advertising costumes have been coming in the mail & got the kids asking. As I type, I have a unicorn, a batman & a robin running around the house!

When I was a kiwi kid, it was unheard-of, but in recent years it's become a much bigger deal. Last Halloween my mother (in central Auckland) got something like 30 trick or treaters. (Compared to zero at my house in Oregon.) It seems a bit silly doing it in the spring, but, any excuse to dress up I guess!

Yep, on both Halloweens' we've been here we've seen kids up and down the streets trick'n'treating.
We turn off all the lights and hide, or go off down the pub :o - last year in the paper they suggested putting signs on your gate if you didn't want them knocking on the door - I'll just keep Summer hungry ;) :laugh

We did not see anyone, not even the little girl from next door, mind you the "Beware of the Dog" sign does tend to keep casual callers at bay... unless they are real resourceful and walk all the way round the house to the other door.....
Wait and see if same happens this year or not.. there was plenty of halloween stuff in the Warehouse.

I does seem in the US that trick or treating is discouraged now. People take the kids to the mall or go to a church run 'alternative'. But we live in a really safe family neighborhood, where people really know each other (on acre lots with lots of trees, in north Georgia, near mountains, where the weather's mild & housing is cheap....so why do we want to move anyway? :laugh ....oh! the adventure!...but I digress!)
Really though, there is something kind of quaint about strolling along after dark with a 2-4 year old, taking in all the sights, & the excitement of ringing doorbell after doorbell, learning the 'trick or treat - thank you' routine, and the incredible (to them) reaction they get. All these people gushing about their costume & giving them candy! Unbelievable :laugh !
Don't know if we'll make it to NZ in time for this year, but glad to know its there. We may miss out this year, I hope to have moved out & be 'in transit' by then. We have to drive to Grandma's in Virginia, Fly to friends in Pheonix, drive to LA & fly to NZ - all that after saying goodbyes in Florida end of Sept. With 5 kids - this will be an adventure :laugh !
