Quick question just to satify Susan's nerves.
I have booked my flight to NZ to come out and look for work, i will be traveling up and down both islands staying for one month, or until someone gives me a job.
Susan has asked me to double check what Visa's i will need to do this.

I know the answer but i'd thought i'd put it to the audiance before i phone a freind.

so:
do i need a visitors visa to come to nz and look for work.
do i need a work permit or visa to look for work
do i need anything elese other than my passport

Hi John

I think you can go out for up to 6 months without the need of a visa (up to 12 months with a tourist visa). You can't say you're looking for a job when you got out there - your just a tourist remember!!!

I've had problems with companies saying you need a visa/permit before applying for posts, but you can't get a work visa without an offer of a job.

Good luck and I'll see you at the NW meet.

Cheers
Jon

John. I would agree with Jon on all points. I think you can extend a visitors visa to 9 months if you can give good reason. Be a bit carefull of what you carry through immigration with respect to job hunting, I believe that if an over zealous customs officer comes accross things like cv`s in your luggage it could cause problems. One idea I have had is to put all relevant docs (where possible ) onto disk, and just put said disks in with a portable cd player. I cant see them being curious enough to check that one out. But maybe someone here knows otherwise.

Spot on Timbo.

It really isn't at all advisable to carry paper copies of your CV with you. If they get spied by an eagle eye you're done fore. Putting them on a CD is a very good idea.

You can enter NZ as a visitor for up to 6 months. No special visa is required to be stamped in your passport. When you fill out your customs entry card on the plane, just say your reason for visit is a holiday and to visit friends. Have you got an address in NZ where you can say you're staying?

After all - you are a visitor on holiday - they don't need to know anything more than that.

If Susan gets too stressed out tell her to give me a call. I'll see you at the meet so will speak then to try to help with her stress levels ...... I know how she feels.

Thanks all, :nice1
you have clarified what i have said to her, but you know, i had to ask otherwise she would have had kittens.
i am actually going to take my Laptop so all names address and details will be held on that.
I will need to post some questions later with regard to traveling around, car hire, where to stay what to see, how i go about transferring funds for the month, arranging to meet agencies employers etc.
Yes, I have several addresses that i can say i'm staying at. they are all Manchester st Chch though???

but for now, i'll sign off for a couple of weeks as we go on holiday tomorrow.

Diny, we will look forward to seeing you on the 27th and anyone else that is coming to the 2nd north west meet.

ta-rar!

John :cheers

make sure your mobile phone is an 'unlocked' one and bring it with you. you can buy a vodaphone simcard pack for $35. its a real disadvantage not to have a phone when youre doing business type things.
