what do you do before the shippers come ????

I know empty washer etc of water & defrost fridge etc etc - but what do I do about curtains etc - do I take them down ? - Do I have to hang around & point to things & say yes or no ??

I am having an empty room with things that are not going ie suitcases , cat stuff & I was thinking of putting big notices on the other things that are staying - is this the right thing to do or not ?

feel a bit silly asking really

thanks in advance

I guess it all depends on what service you opt for. We chose the self pack option. We collected a stack of packing boxes from the shippers and then filled them ourselves. We took all the curtains down, packed everything except actual furniture.

We had one room (the office) where we put things that were not being shipped, and actually put a note on the door saying 'nothing in this room is to be packed'. It made life very simple, they knew exactly what they should be loading and I just sat back and watched (and kept them plied with tea and chocolate bikkies).

Thanks Diny

definatly having a JM free room - probably so I can go in there & have a scream !!!! They are packing for us - I think I'll have to take curtains etc down as I will want them washing - mind you that might be silly - they will only get scrumpled up in transit ..... sorry rambling (again )

thanks again

Vic I'd definately wash the curtains, at least you know they were sent clean then, and just fold them up.

Check whats going from your kitchen cupboards too, and maybe just put a big sticker on one cupboard full of the stuff you don't want them to pack.

You can't be in every room with them when they are packing so I'd move or sticker anything you don't want them to pack to be on the safe side.

Good luck!

Anything you can do to assist the movers will be appreciated by the packers, flatpacking furniture, disconecting appliances and electronics and things like taking down curtains is really your responsibilty anyway. Great idea to have a room where nothing is to be packed and a no entry zone. Labels are also a good idea as there is nothing worse than something getting packed when it wasnt supposed to be. Also dont make the mistake on piling everything that is to be packed into one room or area as this makes it more difficult for the packers. It is amazing how much difference time wise to a move between an organised person and not so one!

We organised all our luggage into a 'no go zone' for the packers. Got all the pictures off the walls and into one room so they were all together. Same with the ornaments and got all the kitchen stuff out onto the sides. Also got all the stuff down from the loft. Had everything in one room upstairs so managed to get most of the rooms cleaned as they went round clearing up. We left about 1/2 hour after they left with the container which was great :)

Good luck, don't get stressed and if it's a nice day get a couple of chairs out, put your feet up and drink cups of tea as there's nothing you can really do other than stand in the packers way :nice1

Don't forget you are paying these guys a lot of money ,so let them earn it .

We did self pack ,so packed toys ,books ,clothes ,kitchen stuff ,pictures ,videos etc myself .

They wrapped the big mirrors ,Dyson ,Ironing board ,furniture,Fridge ,washer etc.

If you wash your curtains ,make sure they are completely dry ,you don't want them going mouldy.

If you are paying them to pack it is not your responsibility to take anything down. Our packers actually instructed us not to and said it was easier for them if we left things alone. They also reminded us that we were paying a lot of money for their service and to just relax and enjoy not having to do it all.

Some movers will appreciate flatpacking etc but it really isn't necessary to stress yourself out if you don't have to. One word of advice I would give is keep behind things you want packing last such as the hoover as they packed ours on the first day (with a full bag) and we had to borrow a neighbours to clean the house before we left.

Hope all goes smoothly. :)

My number one tip is to arrange to go out for the day / days that they are there. Honestly - its best to let them get on with it - and I reckon its just less stress on you that way. Definatly either put stuff in aroom if its not to go (we just labled things as we didnt want to shift them).

If you do head out - all you need to do is run through things with the crew in the morning so they know whats what.

Seroulsy - we ahd a lovely few days out, and virtually no stress.

Spudulike,

I would doubt any removal company would be that happy about taking curtains down, the other things are more a personal choice however you should note that just because the removal company take something apart at origin just not mean it will be put back together at destination. I would certainly recomend doing your own electronics as then you have some idea of how it goes back together. At the end of the day it is up to each individual on how much they want to get involved, I would check with the removal company to see what is required of you at the time. Personally I would prefer to stay on hand during the packing/moving as well but that is a personal choice only and I would have thought most companies would not have a problem with you not being there providing they have clear instructions and maybe a contact number and that you return to sign any paperwork.

thanks everyone

Think i'll hover around - hopefully it will be a nice day & I'll be able to takr my book down the garden & chill :laugh .

Going to do a pit of prep for the movers - curtains down , electrical items unplugged etc . I feel its going to be a chaotic weekend (again)

thanks again
