Since we have been quoted by all the shippers so far, that we have 1500 cubic feet of 'stuff' (all of them have come up with that figure so we are guessing they must be correct!!) and we will need a 40 footer, Kev is now thinking of taking a few additional items and filling the container!!
Has anyone taken over a trailer, he has an Ifor Williams, 10 x 5.6 foot trailer which he was going to sell, and replace in NZ. Kev seemed to think that trailers needed registration documents like cars but some of the 'bumpf' left by the shipping companies for us to read suggests otherwise, just that proof of ownership is required.
So anyone shed some light for us??

Hi Marcia
I called the LTNZ as their website fact sheet is as clear as mud to me
http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/factsheets/49.html
Spoke to them and it does need licensing to be on the road. I had to assume a lot here (knowing zilch about trailers) and if it's the normal type of tailer that you tow behind a car, they said it would be about $120 for plates and rego for 12 months. WOF (MOT) is extra and each WOF station sets its own rate. If it's towed behind a truck it will be more.
You can also email them info@landtransport.govt.nz
I'm thinking there's many more important things to stuff in the container (Bisto, walker crisps, chocolate) and then buy a trailer here. :D

Yes Marcia, as Smiler says, they have to be registered in NZ, but this is quite easy, I have to organise these for the Operations trailers, they have a few.
and we get reminders in when they are due, and then I just get all the pwk together and get the blokes to take them in for their WOF (MOT) and bobs yr uncle its tested for another year!

if you have room to fill in your container then bring it, it has to be registerd and will get a new reg plate for the rear as long as its not corroded, lights work and tyres and wheel bearings ok then not a problem. both 50mm and 1"7/8 size tow balls are common here, you may have to change the lighting plug or buy an adaptor to convert from the round connector to the more popular flat type here in NZ.

forgot to add you will also need to fit a safety chain to the trailer and use a "D" shackle to attach/secure the trailer to the towing vehicle
