Can anyone help me with this one… I want to bring my ATV (four wheel off road vehicle) when we move to NZ. It seems that it will require a MAF inspection as I expected, however, I have also been led to believe that it will incur duty because I have not owned it for a year. I am quite miffed about this, as strictly speaking it isn’t a car, or passenger carrying road vehicle etc. The ATV will only be used on private land (off road) and as such I wouldn’t consider it should be put into the same category as a “car”. If any one can help, I would be grateful.

Sorry Brit guy but you are correct. It is actually GST @ 12.5% you pay though not duty. If you have not owned and used it for more than 12 months, GST applies even to new residents. You will get some depreciation for length of time owned so still maybe worth it. Just make sure it is also spotless and you shouldnt have any problems passing the MAF inspection.
