I have decided that we should really start looking at where we are going to stay when we get to Welly at the end of October, and would appreciate any recommendations of guest houses etc., for a few nights stay before we find our rental property.

We'll also need some kind of transport so I s'pose we'll also need pointing in the direction of a car place.

We have considered hiring a camper van for a couple of weeks also.

You can tell how organised we are can't you :roll but as we're about 12 weeks away from coming, I thought I'd best start thinking about what's on the other end of the flight when we arrive ;)

How many people in your family unit again? My sister's partner (Wellington) is a rental property owner/manager. I could ask him if he has anything coming up from end of Oct in any of his properties.

For the first few nights try the Spinnaker Motel, State Highway 1, Plimmerton. Plimmerton is a little village, 25 mins drive north of Wellington central on the main highway. Beach across the road from the hotel, Plimmerton village and a train station for journeys into Wellington station. 10 minutes drive north of the City of Porirua.

Plenty of car sales in the Hutt Valley and Porirua - some to avoid though, will find out which ones and let you know over the next few weeks. Plimmerton, Whitby, Paremata, Pauatahanui are all in the same area and from there you can take the road over the Hayward's Hill to the Hutt Valley.

It's just the two of us for now.

by the time my daughter comes over (Jan) we certainly hope to be in a rental by then.

Thanks for the info.

When we arrived we stayed in a Quest apartment (booked it on line through something like rates to go or what if. We had a 2 bedroom apartment with small kitchen and living area. It also included washer and dryer. It was ideal for us - with the kids and meant that when we were up at 3am - we had some space to move around. It was reasonably priced and right in the centre of Wellington which meant we didn't need to worry about car hire for a few days. We stayed there for 4 / 5 nights which gave us time to find a longer term rental outside the city and arrange car hire (rent a dent I think $39 a day!)

We are going to stay with this company on Leeds Street for the first few weeks.

They have their own kitchen with washing machine etc and the price per night seems to be around or less expensive than most motels with kitchens.

I'm booking this from the other side of the planet so I hope this place is ok.

This looks like a good temporary solution. I'm gonna have a deeper look at all this as all we need is a place to rest our heads each night, nothing fancy or special - but clean would be good :p

Thanks

I would say stay somewhere near or in the centre of Wellington. We did this for the first 3 days and was really handy. We stayed in the Mercure Hotel on The Terrace, a 10 minute walk from the centre, found some very cheap rates online. Although it was only a hotel room we didn't really care too much and even ordered room service to save on cooking :D

Used Ace Rentals, really cheap, around $40 a day for a saloon that fit three kids car seats in the back. Also recommend Montys Motors, if you Google it should come up. We got our first 4wd from there and they couldn't do enough for us :nice1
