Just wanting some clarification: am I correct in thinking that my police certificate needs to be less that six months old ONLY when the application is submitted, not necessarily when a decision is made on it? Cheers.

I should think the timings are based on when the application is received rather than when the decision is made. When we lodged our application we were about a month shy of living in the UK for 12 months (we're Americans), and had it been based on when the decision was made, we would've been obliged to submit a UK police report.
