Thanks Tara. Interesting that documentsas important and useable as birth certs. are available on-line like that, and prsumably without having to show any originals of other ID to get it. Have made a note to ensure we have full versions before leaving the country.

Hi Tara
I remember when I was getting all our docs together I nearly slipped up on this one.
I have the old version of birth cert, the one that is about 18" wide and written in wonderful copperplate writing (before any of you ask was it written with a quill ...... I'm only 41 OK).
However, the boys have the modern certs, just ordinary A4 size on pinkish paper. They also have what is called the 'short version' ... a smaller bit of paper with just the basic details on. I was all ready for sending the short version, and had put them in the file I had made up to send my application.
One last read through of all the questions etc before I posted it off. It wasn't until the eleventh hour that I read that short verstion certs WOULD NOT be accepted.
That was a lucky break I guess.

Thanks Tara....I needed that link.
I see it's only £7 if you do it online and don't mind standard delivery. :P

ooops, It's £11.50 if you don't have some reference number they're looking for.
The big question is........ will it say what I'm expecting! :? I've always been a bit suspicious as to why there are no baby photos of me (yet lots of my brother & sister ) and why my birth certificate doesn't have my parents names on it.

I had the same worry as I only ever had the shortend version also no baby photos and three years ago I went to a funeral of my uncle and found that I had two aunts that I never knew of. I was always told that my dad lost his parents when he was 7yrs old and that my uncle went into the navy and there was just the two of them. I have kept in touch with my two aunts and met with all their families but my mother is very funny about them and told me not to have anything to do with them. I started to wonder if I had been adopted as there has been a lot of secrets. It turned out that my dad came from Romany people whom lived on barges and mum seems to have had a problem with this. I was dreading applying for my full birth certificate but relieved when I got it to see that everything is ok and am not adopted or anything after all!

Hi Blue.
your post made me smile, although I know it's quite a serious matter. Don't worry Milliemoo, hopefully things will be ok. Isn't it funny how this whole process makes you look at your life in a different way, like are you held on any police records and do you live up to other's scrutiny of your health? Just a thought...

Having a blonde moment (ok, ok I'm brunette now but.... :uhoh )
Can someone clarify for me which birth certificate is the acceptable one? We have our original certs - the long landscape handwritten one - is that not acceptable?
:? :?

Hi Moorf the birth certificate that you need is the long one with your parents names on and will also say what their employment was at the time.

Yeah - the long 'landscape' handwritten one is fine. That is a full version.
In recent years (don't know when it started) smaller birth certs started to be issued.
The main 'full' version is about the size of an A4 sheet and pink.
The short version is the same colour but more like an A5 size.
NZIS want the FULL A4 size version.
If you only have the old style (which frankly I think look much better - almost regal), then that is the one you use.

hi All,
I did slip up on this one :wah and Immigration rang me on wednesday to ask for full versions.
Yes you can get them on line BUT you can walk into the local office where the births were registered , fill a form, pay £7 and pick it up either that day, the next or it will be posted first class the next day.
Pain in the arse for me at the mo as immigration rang to say all our documents were in order (even the mad 4 years worth of payslips cos my employer was being funny about my expereince(10 yrs) ) and could issue our PR if we had supplied full certificates. I was blisfully unaware that we hadn't!
Hope to get them off by reg mail today :hopeso and you never know may have PR in a couple of weeks :eek

Blue,
I doubt I'll have such an interesting story to tell. My parents moved house when I was born, and that's why they say there's no photos (bit of a lame excuse if you ask me!)
Moorf, wasn't sure if I could go to the local office because I'm in Scotland but was born in England (for my sins) and I think the England & Wales system is different. I don't mind paying an extra £4 to order it in the comfort of my own home :P

Try not to worry too much. I too spent many years wondering why mum and dad had tonnes of pics of my elder sister and 2 brothers but none of me.
My worries were made worse by the fact that my siblings are all dark and slim ....... I'm fair and cuddly (that's how I like to describe myself), and they use to tell me that I was found in the haystack ..... kids can be so cruel.
One day after years of heartbreak I asked mum why she had no pics of me. It turned out to be a very simple reason .......
..... apparently I was a horror kid who would go mental if a camera was produced !!!!!! They said it was an easier, more tranquil life not to include me in any snapshots.
It's the truth too .... now in my 40's I possess alot of the family 'traits', both physical and personality wise.
Hope all turns out OK for you :hopeso

Thanks one and all for this thread. This forum proves its worth yet again.
I didn't even realise we had to worry about the size of our certificates! Checked and although mine was a big one, no tittering at the back ( in the style of Frankie Howard!) Michelle's was'nt.
Another hurdle jumped.
Have a great weekend.

Hi Tash your right it does make you look at your life and also evaluate it!
Milliemoo, when I found out it certainly explained a few things, I love the countryside and to travel and also really love animals and all wildlife as well as the water! My son took to riding horses very quickly and when he went down to Hyde park barracks for training as a lifeguard he picked it up amazingly quickly and also seems to have a natural ability to be able to ride the horses that are difficult! Also my one Aunt worked as a social worker and the other was a carer and some of my cousins are in nursing like me! I also look very similar to one of my aunts and recognised her imiediately when we first met. I did not have any baby photos apparently as I was born nearly three months premature and weighed only two and a half pounds so they did'nt think that I would survive! Dont worry too much am sure it will work out ok for you.

Awwwwwwwwww ......in stark contrast I was nearly10lb and this close to being born in the toilet. Mum went for a pee and the rest is history. It could expain why my sense of humour is often at gutter level! :P
At least that's what my mum told me! I also thought for years that I was born in a park (a park toilet....classy!) because the hospital was called Queens Park.
ho hum.... I was quite a strange child really
