after reading all the recent posts about what to take with us when we move we have now decided to take pretty much everything we've got.
but, we've got some nz friends who live in darfield who lived in london for 5 years and they have told us not to take any televisions with us but to sell them here first as they reckon uk tv's don't work very well in nz.
anyone had any problems? we don't really want to sell our telly as it's only a year old.

I was reading on Sky NZ website last week that TVs from the UK wouldn't work but have since heard otherwise on this forum.

It depends how old they are, if they are new, then you should be fine, as you can adjust the settings, something to do with PAL.
Ours is now three years old and it works here fine, after rejigging a menu setting.

Yes, and if it is older you buy a cheapy video recorder and use that to receive the TV signals and play through your TV set :)

Hi
Definately bring the tv, ours is a flat screen and as only 2 yrs old and works fine. You might experience a problem with the screen after a while which happened to us, but this is not uncommon and is due to the gas in the tv becoming unsettled during transit. We thought we may have to buy a new one but it did rectify it self, other friends had the same problem but a tv shop can de-magnatise the screen.
Hope this helps

Anyone brought a TV from the U.S recently? We have one that is about a year old that I would like to bring with us if it would work OK...
Amy.

US TV's normally work on the NTSC system, whereas NZ uses PAL (don't worry, all to do with frequencies and different phasing systems of the video and sound). However, if it a fairly new set, check the handbook, because there are a lot of modern TV's that are dual standard, and if you go in to the menu system, you can reset the TV, and it will search and set up to the new standard when it sees it. BUT - carefully check any handbook for your TV before you take this option.
Good luck

We brought two TV's from the UK along with Home Cinema system (multi region) and video. The main TV which we bought in 2003 works perfectly however my sons 21' TV bought in 2004 we get picture but hardly any sound, our video is pretty much the same great picture no sound?? Home Cinema system works perfectly... Why some of the items do not work is very strange indeed....

Yes Colin, the video and sound signals are at a different spacing in NZ compared to UK.
Try receiving the TV signal thru a cheap NZ bought video recorder and tune the TV to that to watch TV. I think you have to go through the scart socket for this - somebody correct me if I'm wrong !!

We brought ours and bought a cheap NZ video recorder and have played it through that. Works fine, and they also say you can go through Sky on it.

Help
We brought our UK telly with us knowing the problems. We get the picture perfect but as is usual no sound. As it can not be tuned into New Zealand TV (Pal) I bought a video to use as a tuner. I still can not get it to work, can anyone who has managed to get it to work explain exactly which wires go where to get it to work. I know it is something to do with the audio outlet on the Video to the scart on the telly, but it still doesn't seem to work. Any help would be gratefully excepted.

I'm still ere in the UK for another 2 weeks, but my understanding of the TV thing is that in the UK they receive a PAL I signal, but in NZ it is a PAL B or PAL G, which is basicly the same signal but with the sound in a different place within the signal.
Our Sharp portable has the facility within the settings menu to choose PAL I, PAL B, PAL G etc so we wre taking it and hoping to set it up in NZ. All our other TV's are not branded but Currys or Comet own brand (cheapies) and only although they have a similar menu, the only option is PAL I (UK). So we will dump the portables here and just take the big one, and buy a NZ video to tune it in.
I did ring three TV places to ask about converting them to PAL B/G, but they all said the cost is more than a new TV, the only execption is if you have a telly over 6 years old where the internal components are more interchangable, as opposed to modern ones which need a complete board change (so they said).
I will find out if this info is right when my container gets to NZ :o

Yes, it will tell you in the specifications pages in the back of the hand book, failing that, do a search on the web for your model number. Always find some sort of info on here. It really is worth a try because there are so many TV's that can receive multi formats now.
Lucky for me my cheapo Bush TV receives them both :)

For anybody else who is struggling with this, have a look at this excellent resource from Surrey university
http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Contrib/WorldTV/broadcast.html
Gives you all the tech details of each tv system.

Most new TVs (especially LCD and plasma) should be able to accept pretty much any video standard, including PAL I/II and B/G and even NTSC (I prefer my US DVDs to play in NTSC so there's no 3:2 pulldown but that's another story!) so any reasonably new Telly should have a setting somewhere to change and enable you to watch the (great, honest) 4 main free-to-air channels over here!
