Hi All,
I am seriously looking at emigrating as soon as possible from England. After going through all the information on the web I have become very confused about just how to get the ball rolling with this.
I have heard that it is possible to go across on a six month visitor visa and then whilst over there as long as you can prove you have enough money stay a further six months.
Although ideally I would prefer to have some type of work to go over to.
Really need help with what to do first, then second, etc, etc.
My wife is 37, I am 31 and no children. We would be able to go with around £100,000 GBP.
Thanks and sorry for the non-specific post.
Paul.

The place to start would be to decide if you can go the PR route. On the NZ web site they have a points calculator. Do that and then see how many points you have. Another option would be to get a job offer. What do you do for a living?

Hi,
Thanks for replying. My wife is a care assistant for people with learning disabilities and I am a buyer.
I will have a quick look now at the New Zealand website.

I came over on holiday and whilst here got a job offer. You can then get a work visa and see if NZ is the place for you, before committing to permanent residency.
So, it is perfectly feasible to take your six month vacation, travel around the country and test the waters first. I would certainly recommend that to just applying for permanent residency.
Also, once you are in NZ it is much easier and cheaper to arrange PR - eg: medicals can be done at any doctors and are far less costly.
Check websites like Seek, to see what oportunities are available in your field of employment. This will give you some idea of the number of posts around by region - although most jobs in NZ don't advertise the salary levels.
HTH.

I am interested in your reply, Kerry, because I am a kiwi living in Sweden and about to arrange for my partner to apply for PR on the basis of our relationship.
We were actually wondering whether we should enter the country with him on a tourist visa and then apply from NZ (the application fee is lower if you apply in NZ and we would be able to visit the office to make sure we had all the paperwork, whereas here we would have to mail it all to the UK).
So this is an ok way to go? Any advice appreciated!
Thanks,
Rose

Hi Rose - I have no idea about partnership visas really.
I guess the only problem you may enounter would be if your partner was entering on a visitor visa when it was obvious he was planning to stay permanently.
But, it certainly does seem much easier to get the paperwork sorted from being in-situ.
Have you rung and asked NZIS for advice - maybe say something like your partner has never been to NZ and isn't sure he'd want to stay etc. It may work?
I don't want to offer duff advice - I really do have no clue!
Sorry.

Rose - I'm a kiwi about to take my American husband to NZ. We are going to apply for his PR once we are in NZ as it's cheaper and medicals are easier. We have got him a one year work visa with outward passage waived so that he can fly to NZ on a one way ticket. It was very straightforward. I would say, PM me if you want more details, but I'm going to be offline for a while soon so that won't work - try searching for my recent posts if you like, I've discussed this topic quite a bit.
good luck

Hi OregonKiwi
thanks for the advice about searching the site. I had been sure I'd apply for PR but now I am aware of the other options, including applying for a work permit/visa on partnership grounds and then, once in NZ, going for PR. Cripes!
We will enter NZ on a return ticket, which is just as expensive as a one way for some bizarre reason. So we can go in with him on a tourist visa and then apply but I hope it will not take 9 months for him to get approval. Do you know how to find out the waiting times? we would start in Auckland.
Thanks!
Rose

I am new to the site today, so please forgive me if I am repeating all that has been said before. My husband and I would like to move to NZ sooner rather than later, therefore looking at temporary work visas.
1. All the job offers I have seen on the web carry the tag 'must have a permit to apply for this post', or words to that effect. Yet a job offer is required to get a temporary work visa. How on earth do you get around this? My husband is an IT professional: would a company offer him a job without a visa?
2. Assuming my husband is offered a job and gets a temporary visa, what should I do? I don't qualify for a temporary visa. Can I come in under his Family Stream?
Thank you.

Rose, you could always completely deny knowledge of each other, and a relationship that started on the filght to NZ over a G+T blossoms into a serious relationship!! ;)
Stranger things have happened.....
Good luck

June, if the job ads say that the person has to have a work permit, it probably means that they don't plan to "sponsor" the applicant + they may not want to wait while the work permit is being issued.
It isn't actually so difficult for a company to write a support letter and fill in a couple of forms for immigration purposes. Its much easier for them to do that, if the job is in the "skills shortage list" (IT is in the list). I guess your partner would be better off applying at larger companies that have HR departments that are familiar with immigration processes.
The companies may feel more comfortable hiring someone that they see and talk to first, before bringing him/her down to NZ, so if you have a chance at all to do a recce trip and look for a job there and then, it may be easier to secure a job offer. Maybe try "working holiday" visa first?
If your partner qualifies for a work permit, you may apply for a work permit for family reasons (your partner will be tied in with the company who offered the job, but you would be free to look for any job). Its pretty straightforward, if you can prove your relationship (married, shared household, etc).
Our work visas were issued in couple of weeks, once I had the job offer and all the relevant documents collected. Good luck!
