Remember the scare stories about a landslide in the Canary Islands causing a mega-tsunami that would wipe out the eastern US seaboard and southern England? Subsequent investigation (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/08/040815234801.htm) proved them baseless.
As with most things there a varying opionions about when and where an earthquake will strike. The worst case scenario always gets into the news. Doesn't stop millions of people living on the San Andreas fault!!
Right, off to the supermarket to stock up now, just a precaution you understand ;).

Maybe it's just a plot by you south islanders to scare the rest of us away! Seems a report like this may send quite a few running-at least to the north island! :exit
Just as I was thinking that the middle of the north island might be the safest place to be I realised that area is surrounded by volcanoes! :uhoh I guess all of us who strive to move to NZ have a little daring streak. ;)

And, if you think the North Island is safe, read about the dormant (not extinct) volcanoes on which Auckland is built. Ruapehu in the central North Island erupted not many years ago (completely disrupted the ski season!!). And how much of the North Island's electricity comes from the South Island hydro lakes - so the North Island would be well disrupted too. And of course, there's that number 41 bus with your name on it :laugh . Life's too short to worry about maybes. (Although that documentary on two or three years back about the super volcanoes in Yellowstone park scared the heck out of me :exit ).

think I'd still rather take my chances in New Zealand with its earthquakes, volcanoes and predicted tsunami's, than live with some of the nutters on the loose in the UK!!! ;)
Anyone got the link to that disaster kit list??????? :o

Potential made disasters could be just be as bad.
We live a couple of miles from Portsmouth naval base which hosts a number of nuclear powered vessels. If one of their reactors went critical we would be goners.
Life is full of risks, it is best to get on and do your best to enjoy it. While you can....... *:)

The earthquake 'experts' have been predicting an imminent earthquake as long as I can recall. Usually Wellington is the target of their scaremongering. It’s a nice way for the researchers to ensure their research grants are in place for another year.

Ah to heck with it, Auckland could blow at any minute too with all its volcanos underneath, cant remember the exact number, but its a lot! :uhoh

Portsmouth Naval Base isn't a home port for any nuclear powered vessels, though an occasional sumarine or US/French carrier may visit.

There is risk living anywhere. The risks just change.
I live in the upper midwest of the USA. Relatively little risk of earthquakes, but we get our own life threatening disasters. We just had several large tornados rip through the area a couple days ago. Lots of poerty damage and one death. But that doesn't keep from living here (the freezing winters and the giant mosquitoes, maybe).
Earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, fires, tsunamis, volcanos, tornados, and more. There is no such thing as a "safe" area to live. Hell getting in your car every morning is probably the single biggest risk you take in life.

Hi, I'm new and green. :wah
Thanks for the info about the new earthquake report. But I read a book by a guy called Bill Bryson who has a chapter that Yellowstone in the US is due to go off and would cause a world ice age, he compared it with the event that wiped out T-Rex and co.
Risks everywhere unless EOI to another planet.
I just think NZ is prob the best place to head on this one.
Fingers :laugh

Did anyone watch the Krakatoa prog on telly here in NZ last night? Woz turned to me at the end and told me to check the Smiler quake kit!! I'm off to check the list :exit
I found the Yellowstone chapter by Bryson fascinating, I hadn't seen the documentary in the UK on Supervolcanoes at that point so didn't know the extent of what lies beneath!
And yesterday, whilst sat on neighbours deck, they asked if we felt the earthquake a week or so back (no, we hadn't :uhoh ) and they then proceeded to show us the crack down the centre of their patio area - caused by a quake a few years back and told us that's how our hearth came to have a crack in it too!
I guess if it's going to happen, it's going to happen... I wouldn't let something that may, or may not, happen affect your decision, could be next week, could be next century..

The Krakatoa show last night was great.
Auckland is built on about 50 volcanoes, the large majority of which are only dormant not extinct, so the same could, theoretically happen here.
The ARC website states:
"Based on the number and frequency of previous eruptions, there is once chance in 1000 (1:1000 yr return period) that an eruption could occur in Auckland in any one year.
In any 50 year period, there is a 5% probability, or 1 chance in 20 that an eruption will occur from the Auckland Volcanic Field."
There is a NZ govt website with advice about potential disasters and how you can prepare for them:

Up here in Auckland the risk of earthquakes seems relatively low, certainly nothing as high as it would be places such as Wellington or Hawkes Bay. I've been here for well over 2 years and never felt so much as a tremor.
Landslips and flooding from heavy rainfall is probably a much higher risk.

We have had similar discussions with lots of Aucklanders that have lived here for 30+ years, their response has been not that "old chestnut!" Apparently every few years they bring up some type of natural disaster. However i do think it's better to be prepared, so we do have a disaster plan in place and constantly add to our surivival kit.
Life is full of the unexpected, isn't that why we're all here?
:)
